Barry should have been homegrown. They let him go back to ASU for his second year. The difference was like $10k.
Well, not quite. The Giants drafted him in 1982 out of high school while the Pirates drafted him in 1985 out of college.
But this brings up an interesting what if scenario. Would his signing made a difference on the 1987 and 1989 post seasons? Would his presence made a difference on the Tampa whispers? Would Magowan still have bought the team? Would ownership made the same push to keep him as they did to sign him? It’s a weird thought on the possibility that he could have started his career in SF but put in his best years somewhere else.

It was so much fun to watch him hit. I think I was the last guy to find out that he was cheating.

thank you for the correction. Right, the Giants drafted him out of Serra, the Pirates out of ASU. I believe he went to college due to a difference of $10k in bonus money.

The Giants signed IF/OF Alerick Soularie to a minor league contract. Soularie was a 2nd round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2020 He has a .722 OPS in parts of 4 seasons as a pro.

Interesting how the Giants are handling Mason Black in AAA. For example, today he throws 4 shut out innings on 69 pitches so the manager pulls him before the 5th frame. Is he on a pitch count? Does the org feel that the issues he dealt with in the big leagues requires short stints in AAA? I would think that stretching him out would be most beneficial (pushes him and gives him the chance to work on lineups a 3rd time through) but I am obviously not an expert.

Looking at Richmond's hitting stats (which are just awful, their best hitter is Grant McCray, with a .765 OPS. Over half the hitters have an OPS below .600), I noticed that Logan Wyatt has only gotten into 14 games this year. So I looked at his stats and see that he hasn't played a game since April 25th. However, he is still on the roster and is listed as active. I would guess he is injured but it is weird that there hasn't been a roster replacement as the Flying Squirrels currently have only 25 players on the roster counting him as active.

No one down there who can replace Snell. I wonder if Alex Cobb is anywhere near returning

Last I heard, his rehab had to be paused. He won't be ready. Closest to being ready from the 60 day IL is probably Adam Warren. However, none of the pitchers on the 60 day have started any rehab assignments so they are all a bit away from being ready.

Eldridge was in HS at this point last year. It is amazing how well he is doing at the age when most of us were throwing up at a frat party.

I have to hand it to FZ for both of his 2-way player picks over the last couple years. I criticized him hard on both of them, and they are both really looking special this year.

I thought Orange and Black were the Arizona teams…

They also designate the DSL teams.
And now they have only one team in the ACL while there are still two in the DSL. I would guess that was a result of the reduction in allowable minor leaguers carried by each org. And there are a few guys should probably have been promoted from the DSL to the ACL this year but are stuck in the DSL.

I doubt many REAL prospects are affected by the reduction of jobs. If a team likes a player, he will advance at his pace. Fillers will never hold back a prospect.

The “problem” arises on the tweener players. Guys who may be good enough to get a cuppo, eventually, or maybe actually turn into a replacement level player may get lost. But they are SUPER rare, and it doesn’t make sense to cater the whole structure of the minor leagues for that one unicorn every few years.

Of, course, Mike Piazza needs someone to hold his beer…
