Why does Sacto suck so bad? I took a glance at their stats, and they arent THAT bad. The team ERA is 4.10, which actually is somewhat decent.

Looking at the stats, I wouldnt necessarily expect a WINNING team, but a .300 team? Is it just a bad-luck team? Is the in-game management costing them game after game? According to BBRef, their pythagorean W-L is 31-36, so it would seem like they just arent getting the breaks...

They are 13th out of 16 in runs scored

They are 9th out of 16 in batting average

They are 12th out of 16 in slugging

They are 13th out of 16 in on base percentage

They are 5th out of 16 in ERA

They are 14th out of 16 in Holds (Bingo!)

They are 13th out of 16 in Saves (Bingo!)

Mike Broadway leads the team with 3 saves?!?

It appears that the bullpen is the problem, holding leads and saves.

And coming into the season, we (read "I") was screaming about our depth of bully arms on the farm...

:L

I think our real pitching talent is below AAA. I think Heston, Blackburn and Stratton will be OK (and I have high hopes for Blackburn, who after a brutal beginning, has been steadily lowering his ERA).

I was never a pitcher, but I would guess that of all the components of a team, the bullpen is most like a basketball team, where each person has a role to play, but also may be called upon to play other roles. The bullpens of Sacramento and Richmond have been aweful, not because there is no talent (though that might be a factor), but because guys are settling into roles.

Example: in San Jose, Rodolfo Martinez has been the closer since Day 1, and now has 19 saves.

In Richmond, Tyler Rogers, who has 10 saves and hasn't given up an earned run in 32 appearances, wasn't the closer until about three weeks ago for some reason.

I think the same is going on with the Giants' bully. If we had the core 4 in their prime with this starting staff, we'd be doing better than the Chubs. As it is, with JA gone, ROmo on the DL, and JLo not pitching as well as was expected of him, it has been difficult to establish clear roles. A few days ago, Noggin used 5 pitchers in one inning. That would have been unheard of in the last few seasons. Not so now. It may take a while longer to settle on the roles, and guys like Osich, Law and Strickland need to step up their performance. When called upon, they need to do their job.

The bullpen makes me so sad when they enter the games

From Pavlovic

Machi was a minor leaguer with the Cubs this season, but was released earlier this month after getting arrested for public intoxication and urinating in public.

The Des Moines Register reported that Machi was spotted urinating on the bumper of a car owned by an employee of a local restaurant, and when he was asked by the employee to stop, Machi asked if the employee wanted to fight over it.

Machi had posted a 3.68 ERA in 20 Triple-A appearances before his release.

Sounds like relatively meh situation. Sure, it isnt GOOD, but come on people, stop expecting athletes to be saints.

That said, this signing is equally meh. He is getting the looksee because of the success he had here, but I think he is also getting the looksee because attendance in Sacto is dropping due to their struggles.

Another thought: Sacramento's bully would be much stronger with Law, Gearrin, Osich, etc. they have quite a few "filler" pitchers on that staff.
And if the Giants moved up some of the guys from Richmond who deserved it, there would be fewer "filler" pitchers.
