Looks like a soccer ball... but pretty miraculous story nonetheless. Don't imagine a little 5-6" ball is going to help you very much in that situation.

I know some riptides & coastal currents can be powerful but damn... Hard to imagine getting swept out to sea unless you really don't know how to swim very well.

D’oh! I just read the headline and a description of football. I didn’t watch anything to see it was soccer. Oh well, same idea follows, not just a sport and goalie, hold onto the ball when you can.

If you are unaware of the rule to swim parallel to the shore and not try to immediately swim back when caught in a strong riptide, you could be an Olympic swimmer and it pretty much wouldn't matter
