lost a close mixed doubles match last night. Both my flat serve and my slice serve were on and were a legit weapon. Ground strokes felt good, was able to spin the ball in with my recently strung racquet and volleys felt good.

They just got everything back. He had pace on his shots, but she didn't have much. We should have jumped on that sooner. Instead we stayed on serve for most of the match when I should have been poaching her shots more often. Can't believe I just thought of that. Dammit. I suck at mixed doubles. I need to learn strategy.

they have devices you attach to your racquet that I have not yet tried but look interesting. I don't know if there is anything that measures the rpm's on the ball, but there very well could be some out there. I haven't done lessons or anything in years, so I don't know what is out there anymore, but I would love to try it.

Shit, just watching a slow motion video of my serve was cool back in the day. I love seeing how ugly my form can be.

LOL!

I'm sure it's pretty good. ;)

I always felt out of sync in doubles. Always wondering where to stand. Terrible at poaching. I felt much more comfortable at the baseline when my partner was serving or receiving. Also it's pretty much pointless to stand at the net if your partner is serving moonballs pretty much. I have been walloped by the returner right on the body. So unless you have a pistol serve partner, I would just advice standing back. In my serving games we always held pretty easy cause my serves used to be bombs and I had a great poaching partner who had easy put aways.

i didn't start playing until i was an adult

i naturally hit inside out better than cross court, and play at about a 4.5

head liquid metals with kevlar mains and nylon crosses

I gave it a go back in 1989-90, the Becker-Edberg era, learned a little bit of the basics and played a few months, broke an expensive racquet borrowed from my uncle, and kinda quit playing/learning. Then I re-picked it up again in 1998-99, at the ripe age of 27. And stuck with it till about 2011. Let up after that to occasional hitting.

Bay Area in California.

I'll also finally get around to answering, tonight, the unanswered question in this thread: What my racket is. :L :dhd:

Here is my racquet from the mid 90s. Wilson Hammer 7.2.

As I said earlier, I rarely play. If/when I play more regularly, I would look to try something more modern.

I was curious as to the specs.

This says it's 9.0 oz. I don't know if there's a difference between a "Hyper Hammer" and regular Hammer.

@ElTexan , answering the question in his Your racquets? thread.

+++++++++

Wanted Wilson Hyper Hammer 7.2 - Stringforum.net Board

I'm looking for a used or new Wilson Hyper Hammer 7.2 in Grip size 4 1/4 so size 2.

Specs:
255g / 9.0oz
110 head size / 710 cm2
Pattern 16x20

Racquet is too light. You risk elbow injury. Should be at least 10.5-11.5 Oz.

I agree. It was 20 - 22 years ago when I got it.

I will tell you what, teaching your girlfriend how to hit a tennis ball is difficult. Have any of you attempted teaching? I did it back in high school and college during my coach's summer camp, but it wasn't a one on one kind of thing. I am running short of ways to make hitting forehands and backhands interesting. Any suggestions?

I don't know if this will make it any more interesting, but what about using a ball machine that changes speeds?

Would you and your GF play doubles together? Singles?

Did she want to learn on her own?

Maybe switch to serves, just to try a different shot?

we aren't there yet. I am still soft tossing the balls to her. Maybe somewhere down the line I can do something like that. I had looked at ball machines a while back for myself. They are fun for practice.

not playing anything yet, just teaching her. It was her idea, said she wanted to pick up one of my hobbies. I don't know if we will ever play together, but maybe. Who knows.

I also suck at tennis this year. I have only played mixed doubles so far this year, but I haven't won a match yet. It is terrible.

:(

If it were me, I'd also feel like I'm bringing the other person down, and that they would be better without me.

it's frustrating as all hell. My serve was way off last night, just couldn't hone it in.

Also, the dude on the other team was foot faulting like crazy. How the hell are you supposed to call someone on a foot fault and be sure of it?

I guess you bring a small video recorder and aim it at the side of the court serving. Lol. Then use it for replay as necessary.

Was he faulting going forward, or horizontally past the center divider?

Marat Safin kept getting called for foot faults at the 2008 USO for going past the center divider. He would then blow up and say it was a BS rule, or that he wasn't really doing it.
