I think (not really) that by bringing a third party in that maybe a deal could be done. It seems to me that both sides are not even willing to be the one who gives up anything. The NHL doesnt want to say " we are willing to go seven years max on contract lenghth" and the PA is not willing to say "if we split the slush fund money we will agree to 10% year to year variance on deals over 5 years" Maybe if some one else says these things they can say they agreed for the good of the game and the fans without looking like they caved.

So yea I think i just said egos got in the way

Non-binding mediation for NHL and PA will be as useful as the union's labor board challenges. Killing time til BoG meeting on Dec. 5.

Mediation is off to a rip-roaring start :L

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen has issued a follow-up statement today regarding a mediator assigned to the ongoing labor negotiations between the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association:

“Within one hour after I issued a press release announcing that further negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA would be conducted under the auspices of the FMCS, it has been called to my attention that there are issues involving an allegedly hacked Twitter account associated with Commissioner Guy Serota, one of the mediators I assigned. Accordingly, in order to immediately dispel any cloud on the mediation process, and without regard to the merits of the allegations, I have determined to take immediate action, namely to remove Commissioner Serota from this assignment.”

I think giving the Commissioner the ability to fine owners & other management personnel is BULLSHIT. I truly believe there are owners throughout the league who want to play this year. Unfortunately their voices can't be heard.

I would not have any problem at all believing the number approaches "all but two".

I know of at least one that wanted it off and running from the get-go and has already lost a ton. Possibly lost everything, we don't know yet.

No one can tell me that Melnyk and Pegula are not interested in getting it done. Not much chance Mario is REALLY siding with the owners, either. Holland seems pretty reasonable, too.

Even if the union decertifies and they reach an agreement, before that agreement (the new CBA) gets ratified, the union has to get the band back together. Therefore, it doesn't look like a free for all - although the players could agree to play without a union...

Any possibility that this is one of the goals all along?

Ok, the only fair way to settle this is to contract the league by those two teams. Sorry Boston and St. Paul, you really didn't deserve teams anyways being in southern markets.

This new trend of saying my twitter was hacked is hilarious.

what did the guy say that made him say his twitter get hacked?

as I understand it, he deleted his account when he was assigned to the file.
it took only a few minutes for someone else to come up with a fake of his account, who blamed the "temporary" deletion on a hack.

Yeah, I think this mediation is just a ploy by the NHL to distract the NHLPA from their decertification plans. Very slim chance that it will work.

i dont believe they will decertify. I think they are using it as a threat to push the NHL. I believe that the NHLPA is starting to crack

The Sportsnet Crew had Daly on the HockeyCentral show this past Friday and they asked Daly about mediation and he said, "We've always been open to it, but we really don't think it would move the process forward at this point".

The players threaten to de-certify and lo and behold, federal mediation is brought in.

sid's insurance is going to be astronomical.. with his contract and his propensity for head injuries, it's going to be nearly impossible for european teams to insure him i think.. especially this late in the game where most teams that could've afforded him, have already signed a couple NHL'ers

Meh - How many times have we heard this before in the past weeks? "If you really knew what was happening out of the public eye blah blah blah..."

I think the point was "despite all the posturing, they were $1b apart over a 5 year term, and now it's $182m apart." can't deny that's most of the way to the finish line.

2,900 -sigh-
