From Jason Kay - Editor in Chief of The Hockey News:

Hearing owners reverted to $211M make whole offer as today's starting point (plus $50M for pension). Curious.

If memory serves, $211 million was the original make whole offer, but then the league upped it to $300 million last week. All of a sudden, the pension plan became a huge issue for players, but the league wasn't interested in funding any additional money into the plan. It looks like they may have gone back to the original make whole offer, but in exchange they're willing to pump some cash into the player's pension plan.

Well they took the old offer off the table.
If the PA wants the 39 mil more just agree to the contract issues

Heck the 10 year CBA works in the players favor
The 5% year to year lowers escrow
And the 5 year deals while is to protect the owners from making long term mistakes only acfew players fall into that catagory

Why can't the owners just offer them the 300m, then add 50m to the pension & get a damn DEAL DONE??

AAARRRGGGHHH!!

I think they would if the players give them the contract issues.
The media is focusing on the money becuase that is easy, but the real issue is the contract stuff. The league wants to close loopholes so the teams dont do crazy stuff. By limiting deals to 5 years with 5% variance it keeps the creative GMs from making a joke of the CBA.

So let's say a guy signs a 5 year deal starting at 5 million per season. If the 5% variance is applied year-to-year, the contract would look as follows:

Year 1 - 5,000,000
Year 2 - 4,750,000
Year 3 - 4,512,500
Year 4 - 4,286,875
Year 5 - 4,072,531

Would it be really so terrible to add a couple more years if it gets a CBA deal done?

Doesn't seem like much traction was made here...waiting to see where this goes from here.

Option A: Fehr decides to keep delaying for a couple more weeks to squeeze a few more dollars out of the league.

Option B: Players go over Fehr and call for a membership vote on whether or not to accept the league's latest offer.

Option C: IPW lifts 100 lbs. over his head
