if he doesnt get a contract because of this the NHL is more corrupt than I thought.

Yeah, if the owners can agree to black list one guy, why can't they agree to stop giving out retarded contracts?

From Dacks David Backes quote earlier:
“It wasn’t positioned that way, first of all,” Backes said. “They indicated that they had things that were important to them ... That’s great. They’re important to us, as well. So what they’re saying is that we need to give up (contract) rights that we had previously, and in exchange for that, they will give us an extra $89 million, which we already had (under the previous agreement) ...they’ll just agree to take less from us.”

I understand where he is coming from, but at the same time, he is basing this statement off the prior CBA which is now expired. The extra $89 million of the whole make whole argument is also from the now expired CBA.

If the owners want five year contracts, then get the accountants in the room from both sides and hash out the numbers - you come to a compromise on what number of years to go with, and assess the monetary value of that and then tie it into the make whole provision which in this case is the aforementioned $89 million.

The end result would be a compromise on contract term - if the league and union agree to six year max contracts, then the accountants come up with that corresponding value subtracted from the $89 million. Then if the league says no go, it's entirely on them.

In all of this, the offers that get shot down in a matter of minutes have not yet had the components monetary values all tied together. They are essentially a take it or leave it. I believe if the accountants are in the bargaining process with both sides, then proposals can immdeiately be weighed in real time dollar values and the surprises of the counteroffers aren't surprises anymore.

The union takes the NHL proposal and says we don't like the CBA term, lets cut 2 years off. Ok, but in order to bargain off a proposal like this, don't you then have to give something else up? The PA simply took the league's offer, and said no to contract length, only 8 years instead of the 10, and still wanted the $89 million. They didn't give anything up in the current round of bargaining. You cannot simply say we've already given up the lion's share of the concessions - if you do that, you insult the other side. You have to give and take each time - in effect, the proposals are cumulative, but each bargaining session or give and take session is not.

Narrator: As Bettman took the podium, as he started to carry
He heard a small sound, which caused him to tarry
He turned around fast, he surveyed the range
And who did he see, why it was Michael Grange

Grange: Gary, why? Why are you taking our NHL away?

Narrator: But do you know, that old Bettman, was so smart and so slick
That he thought up a lie, and he thought it up quick

Bettman: Why my sweet little Mike

Narrator: Bettman started to say

Bettman: The owners tell me, we can no longer play
We must cut costs, we cannot wait
The fans will return, for you see they are great

Narrator: Then he patted Mike's head
And sent him away
Leaving us with no hockey
But still expecting us to pay

/with apologies to Ted Geisel

I just saw that my Bettman Grinch podium gif is one of the Top Images on #nhllockout.

Why does it have such a glitch at the end of it though? Is that have something to do with twitter unable to handle a looping gif properly?

Hey Bettman put everyone out of their misery & cancel the damn season.

Any chance Fehr is telling the truth and that both sides are very close to making a deal?

/could be more games cancelled as soon as tomorrow is what I'm hearing.

I have zero faith that Bettman & Fehr can get a deal done. Even if they agreed to something today they wouldn't start until late December or early January at the earliest. When the max amount of games to be played is 40 or less what's the point in having a season?

Back in '95 they started around Jan. 15th and got 48 games in...

Fehr wasn't running the union back then. It's a new ball game now. We've talked a bit about Jacobs in this thread. Jacobs seems to be a hard line owner. Fehr doesn't give a shit. Unless the owners change their stance on things there won't be a deal.

Sure, everyone is quick to post something from twitter as soon as it happens, but no one bothers to answer a question about it?
