I totally agree with everything he's said. Hockey players shouldn't be making a deal of this magnitude without representation. The players hate Bettman yet he's still there and they have to deal with him. What makes the owners so special that they feel they can dictate who can and can't represent the players?

I'm honestly waiting to see the NHL make a single concession form the agreement that just ended.

I agree with him as well. The owners need to realize they can't have it both ways. Many of them spend like there's no tomorrow on UFA's & then bitch about during CBA talks. It really shouldn't be difficult to get this deal done if the owners were willing to be fair.

Donald Fehr is currently addressing the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union in Toronto. TSN is airing his speech right now.

Fehr drops a joke

"if anyone knows how to end this lockout please dont keep it to yourself"

someone yells out

"get rid of bettman"

he smiles and responds

"a doctrine in labour negotiations allows each side to choose their own representative" with a wry smile

a little adlib but close

Nothing like pandering to one of the strongest unions in Canada (and I would assume a strong contingent of hockey fans). Say what you will about both Fehr and Bettman, but they certainly are no dummies.

what will that do? that wont push bettman or the owners? not sure the overall outcome. but it sounded like he was invited to speak at this and recently. so I imagine it was nothing more than that. now hockey analysts will break it down for 2 weeks

It won't do much except score some points in the PR department. The last image we have of Bettman is of a guy mad enough to spit nails while Fehr has remained calm, cool, and collected. Fehr is definitely no Bob Goodenow.

That's basically my stance as well. Both sides have their faults, both have pulled some PR bullshit, but at the end of the day, I can't side with the owners; they have all the power, they are asking for all the concessions, and they are the only ones who can ultimately end the lockout.

The question always is was Fehr just fighting fire with fire?

I am not defending the flaming douche, but he has gotten the owners hating and refusing to work with him. They are now even.

Just like I said a few days ago, if someone wants to negotiate without your representation present, they are trying to screw you. No ifs ands or buts. The personality of your counsel is irrelevant.

Didn't Abraham Lincoln say "He who represents himself has a fool for a client"? Pretty clever fellow that Honest Abe.

Yeah, and if the players had started off saying they refused to deal with Bettman (which the hiring of Fehr sort of was) they'd have been crucified.

Ron Hainsey smear campaign starts in 3... 2...

Pretty good read from Elliotte Friedman.

But, something has gone very wrong between Hainsey and and the league's negotiating teams. It is believed one of the reasons Mark Chipman was added to the mix -- in addition to his moderate nature -- is that it was hoped the defenceman would be more "in line" with his owner present.

I stress I've never heard it on- or off-the-record from any owner, general manager or negotiator -- but there is a rumbling going around that Hainsey will never again get an NHL contract. (He is an unrestricted free agent next summer.)

When I brought it up to him on Friday morning, he nodded in anticipation of the question. Clearly, he's heard the rumours.

"Do you worry that, after your contract is completed, you'll never play in the NHL again?"

"My wife and I have talked about it," he said. "If I play the way I'm capable of, everything will work out."

Yeah, I wonder if it wasn't just a play by the owners. Up until recently a lot of blame was being put on Bettman, saying a deal won't get done cause the players can't stand him. Now it goes both ways.

So if we get Bettman, Daly, Fehr X2, Jacobs, Leipold, and Hainsey out of the room, we essentially have a deal done then, correct?

Sure, go right ahead.

But I can't help but think I could make it a bit better? Maybe show him walk in from the left, pick it up, and then carry it away?
