From twitter this morning it looks to me like they're now fighting over 80 million. In other words, 2.5 mil/owner, and ~130,000/player.

Really?

10 year CBA with an opt out at 8. 5 year max (7 if you resign with your current team), 5% variant, same ufa/arbitration as last CBA.

How is a deal not done?

That all sounds pretty reasonable to me. Assuming too that the $80M is about the make whole provisions.

For that kind of money, how about we just get Thomson, Anschutz, and Pegula to split the bill with the change they find in the cushions of their jets so that we can get some hockey going.

ya that seems to be what it is.. according to twitter (which i read on my phone and am too lazy to try to quote to my computer) the owners upped their 'make whole' offter to 300 mil (from like 230 or something).. the players wanted 383

outside of that, which is rather petty considering the scale, i dont see anything the players can really be in a twist over.. they knew they'd have to go to 50/50, and they knew they'd have to accept a contract length limit and a shut down of back-diving contracts.. to expect to get away with 'winning' any of those is just foolish

Yeah, from what I've read, the biggest remaining hurdle appears to be that the owners want both a 5% variance year-to-year on contracts and contract length to be a maximum of five years (7 years if re-signing with the same team).

The question I have is: Why do the owners need both? Just go with the 5% dollar variance and allow the freedom for players to sign long term deals with clubs.

Yeah, it seems like the 5% variance alone should be enough to prevent this long term deals anyhow. Don't think we're gonna see too many 10+ year contracts when the length won't have a significant effect on the cap hit.

i kind of like this

“@FriedgeHNIC: NHL goes to NBA model on signing free agents. NHL proposal: 7 yrs (your own), 5 (others'). NBA: 5 (your own), 4 (others).”

I think i read "somewhere" that the reason for the 5 year deals was to limit players coming off their ELC. The owners want to bring back the second contract so some rookie doesnt get a crazy contract for one fluke year.
Dont know if that is true but i am on the internet so truth is not needed

i think it also helps keep some loyalty to the home team that drafted you. gives incentive to both team and player to give and get that extra 2 years security

I'm blaming the Kevin Lowe offer sheet to Dustin Penner when Delicious Pancakes was with the Ducks as the catalyst that eliminated the second contract for players.

:D

Pretty detailed... great imagination or good sources?

The Spin

"Let's leave," said Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, turning to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

"It's up to you," replied Daly.

At that point during the talks between the NHL and NHL Players Association on Wednesday, a day that began as a continuation of the momentum generated on Tuesday, both sides were at the precipice, and the 2012-13 season was in jeopardy. Earlier, Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller had angrily vented when the owners said they were disappointed with the players responses to an earlier offer and threatened to pull everything off the table.

i've been in a committed relationship with the NHL for over 25 years, but right now, it feels like i'm just hanging on for the sex.

The less reported story is that they met last night aside from the players and owners meeting to discuss how they could fuck up all the progress made to date.

I wouldn't try to predict how things go today but player mood last night was pretty dark. But it's emotional process. See what today brings.
