We've had a few Dell laptops in our shop over the years. Most users end up with apathy or dislike over them for one reason or another. We have mostly HP and Lenovo laptops these days or 2 in 1's.

Really the only hardware thing I can say about the Dell laptops is we have had a lot of bad luck with their chargers and batteries. Had I think two of them that had their charging ports on the units get broken even.

I used to use an HP but the battery got extremely bad with it and well it was just getting old and I didn't feel like repairing it anymore... I have heard some people saying that eventually battery/charging could be an issue with Dell's... I am not quite sure if this is still an issue with a new 2016 model... hopefully not but if it is I wouldn't be surprised. :noidea:

I don't have anything personally against Dell. They aren't the best looking units, not the slimmest, and they don't tend to have the latest greatest features, but they are work horses and you do get pretty decent warranty support if you have issues under warranty.

The only HP's we have are the spectre series and they are for specific users that want 2 in 1 units.

The main thing is we really don't buy units that don't have SSD's. Even our corporate security manager that needs HD's for large volumes of video still has a laptop with both a SSD for the OS and a full 3tb HD in it. And I really don't pick up units that don't have at least 8Gb ram.

We do check ratings and look specifically for overheating complaints or other cooling issues and durability of screens, kb, touchpads, etc.

Ya'll sound like Mr Robot to me.

I use laptops for work, Excel and other user specific programs all day. Couldn't write code if my life depended on it. Let alone use a smart phone....

Currently have a year old HP laptop and it's battery has already failed.

Never once had that problem with any of my previous Dells.

I'm the IT Director for a casino management company. I wear a lot of hats in my company including buying/deploying/supporting laptops for key users. I also design and build all of our casino surveillance rooms and manage all of their digital equipment and a variety of other tech related functions.

Yeah, those issues are probably more random overall. Like I said, I don't specifically dislike Dell's. I'd use one with no problems. Just most of their lines don't have SSD as options or only like 256G older generation SSD's if they have any at all. About the only thing I can really hate on with them.

Most of the HP's are not good lines IMO. They have a couple of higher end lines worth buying, but their entry level stuff is pretty sketchy.

The one thing I hate about HP's are the Screens/Display I don't know why but I usually have problems with them.

A bit thick for a 2016 laptop, but I'm sure it'll be fine for checking email and normal non-programming work stuff.

Dell seem like a solid workhorse. Oldest laptop in my home is a Dell, still works just fine. Not sure how old it is, but it originally had XP for a operating system so pretty old.
First thing I'd do to your laptop is install a SSD. You can get them fairly cheap now and they are worth the money.

The worst computer I've ever experienced was an HP notebook I was issued for work some years back. It bluescreened from day one, and was basically unusable. The IT guy was never able to fix it. Luckily I got to keep my desktop so it didn't end up being an issue, but that thing sucked. To be fair, I think they just got a bulk of discounted rejects though.

I've had a Dell laptop as my own personal computer in the past, and just switched from a Dell laptop to a Dell tablet at work. They've all been solid.

Did anyone else use to get white lines down your screen (if you had an HP before)

Sounds like you got market value.

I have a laptop at home, and it's an HP with similar specs to your machine and I paid $700 for it. It rarely leaves the desk so battery life I can't really say mine is good or bad...the speed is one of the main factors for me...sometimes I take work home, and one XL sht, and database is rather large...my laptop runs it faster than the i3 work computer.

In terms of how good it is...I think you'll be fine with it for general work.

Laptops are a crap shoot. The same model from any company may work like a charm for one person and be a boat anchor for another person. Anymore I tell people if you're going to get a laptop just go with what you like and when Windows craps out put Ubuntu or one of its derivatives on it.
