There's the rub ... the Tigers need an 8-of-10, 15-of-20 stretch to seriously be in contention, and they just don't have the consistent pitching to do that. You can't just slug your way to a 15-5 streak.

If we had Brennan Boesch I bet we could do it.

Not sure what surprises me more:

-- Cabrera's home run rate, or
-- Verlander's walk rate, which is currently 4.6 (it's 2.8 for his career, and has rarely been above 3.0 in a season)

He didn't look happy at all.

Keating and Craig tried to pass it off that he's relieved instead of happy. I've never seen many guys who openly enjoy playing MLB like he does. (Kids sure, but he's 34.). And not much more fun things in baseball than a walk piece.

Iggy, Upton and Avila all impressive.

Avila on the attempt to steal home was great. He doesn't play first much but he was ready for that. Nice to see smart baseball being played.

Iggy has been impressive defensively the entire season. Now if he can just run the bases better and stay healthy.

Detroit Tigers player Anthony Gose is currently in the minors, working his way through a transition to the pitching mound from the outfield grass.


But slow down on the dreams of seeing the fireballer. It is a tough transition to become a pitcher at this level.

Right now, he is struggling mightily in the lower levels of the Minors, posting an 0-2 record with an 18.59 ERA through 4.1 innings of work.

To his credit, he has struck out four batters. But that has been negated by his five walks.

After Friday's night's win, the Tigers' final record is now projected to be 80-82 by FiveThirtyEight. The site gives Detroit a 25 percent chance of making the playoffs and a 17 percent chance of winning the division.
