I wanted at least a 6-3 home stand, and got it. But it sure woulda been nice to beat Cleveland at least once last weekend.

11-game road trip now, last stretch before the A.S. Break. Gotta be 5-6 or better, INCLUDING a win over the Tribe!!!!

Yep. 12-16 against the AL Central this year, with the deficit mainly due to that ridiculous 0-9 against the Tribe.

Neither pitcher has been very good lately. Zimm has a 5.79 ERA over his last three starts, and Odorizzi has a 5.94 ERA over his last three.

Really concerned with Zimmermann. Looks like he is turning into yet another disappointing FA signing. I would not be surprised if we see a doctor visit coming up.

WOW...what a rally. 8 runs in the 9th

They do tend to score when Zimmermann pitches....

Did you watch the game? Zimm wasn't sharp, but he was also the victim of some bad luck and bad defense. Some scratch high-hop singles, a charged error to Moya, and a bloop double that Upton misplayed (and SHOULD have been charged an error on), leading to an extra run being scored. I am concerned though that Zimm isn't missing many bats (only 3 Ks).

Anibal Sanchez, however, is toast, even though he was credited with the 'W'. 2 more ER in 2 IP.

A lot of sports media predicted that Zimmermann would struggle in the AL. His great April silenced a lot of that. So maybe he is where he should be....a ''usually'' dependable pitcher but not an Ace. On a club with a good offense, like Detroit's, he should win more than he loses.

I guess I am just going to have to adjust to the possible fact that Zimmermann is not going to be dominant, as he was at the start of the season...and that his good W/L record is largely due to Tiger bats.

It is a strange season indeed for Zimmermann. Even early on, he wasn't striking out a lot of batters, so you wonder if it was a little luck (low BABIP-against) that led to the 5-0, 0.53 ERA start. He's striking out batters at only a 5.6/9 rate, well below his career norm (7.4/9 before this season started). I didn't expect dominance from him, just a good season ... 15 wins and about a 3.50 ERA. We'll see if he makes some adjustments. His location certainly isn't as good as it was early in the season, and it seems with the low swing-and-miss rate, he can't miss his spots as much as he has lately.

STARTING PITCHERS
Detroit Tigers
RH Michael Fulmer (7-2, 2.40 ERA)
Lifetime vs. Rays: 1-0, 1.29 ERA in 1 start

Tampa Bay Rays
LH Drew Smyly (2-8, 5.32 ERA)
Lifetime vs. Tigers: 0-1, 5.56 ERA in 2 starts

Michael Fulmer makes his first start in nine days Friday when he takes the mound against the Rays. He had his last start skipped after suffering from dehydration in his shortened outing June 22 against Seattle. Fulmer already has a win over Tampa Bay this season, May 21 at Comerica Park in which he allowed one run on four hits over seven innings.

* Smyly, the former Tiger, is winless in his last seven starts and lasted into the seventh inning just three times during that stretch. His last outing, June 26 at Baltimore, he was tagged for eight runs on 10 hits - including three home runs - in five innings.

Looks like Ausmus will intentionally pass over Fulmer in the rotation once a month, to keep his innings down and try to get him into late September with the total still under 160.

Time for some negative news. Detroit's salary obligations for 2017 are $176 million. AND - that is if you DON'T pick up Maybin's and KRod's options. If they do...then it runs up to $188 million. AND, they still have to deal with arbitration with Castellanos, Iglesias, and Justin and Alex Wilson...which should add another $10+mil. (Do they give Castellanos a multi-year deal to cover arbitration years?)

So without even filling their 25 man roster....Tiger salary is going to be close to $200 million...maybe more. Unless the front office can move one of those fat contracts....I don't see any major FA signing this winter. Of course, Illitch's goal might be - "World Series or what do I give a damn what happens to the Tigers after I'm dead?"

You've got something like $152 million tied up in just seven guys: Cabrera, Verlander, Upton, Zimmermann, V-mart, Sanchez and Kinsler. That leaves about $48 mill for 18 other players if they wanna stay under $200 mill. Not gonna be easy.

I can't see who is tradeable from that group. Cabrera isn't going anywhere, no one wants Upton or Sanchez cuz they SUCK, and I can't see too many wanting to pick up $28 mill/yr through 2019 for a 4.00 ERA pitcher (Verlander). That leaves Kinsler and V-mart as the most tradeable big salaries. An old, slow DH is going to be tough to move. Kinsler is only signed through 2017, so they may want to see if they can get a decent arm (or two good pitching prospects) for him.
