I don't have a whole lot of elation or grief over early spring training pitching. Pitchers are working on mechanics moreso than location in their early outings. If Fulmer is still being roughed up in late spring, I'll worry a little more. But it's not like he was counted on to come north with the team anyway. It may mean nothing more than he needs more seasoning in the minors.

Not unless they move him to the 40-man (which won't happen unless there are a rash of injuries). He is a non-roster invitee to camp.

Read this the other day. I'm not exactly with Gose on this issue. But Im not against him either.

Stats lie? All stats...or just the ones you don't like or agree with? Curious....are you saying that the backs of baseball cards were lying to kids all those years? TOPPS were just making up all those numbers? Al Kaline really didn't hit .300 all those years? Damn!

Statistics don't lie, if done correctly. People may lie if they are dishonest in how they collect the information they use or alter their computations to achieve the results they desire (We have a poster here, that has been accused of that often on another thread). There is also the misuse of statistics by ''cherry-picking" correct statistical findings - using only the ones that reflect well on the point you are trying to make, and ignoring the ones that don't.

Most baseball fans trust STATISTICS. Batting average, ERA, HR totals, pitch counts, runs scored, fielding average...are all STATISTICS. Some fans go a little farther and follow statistics like OPS and FIP, and BABIP. They are all tools to use. They are all statistics. Pretty straight forward and easy to figure out. Ignore them if you wish, but they are just there to help - they aren't dangerous.

I know, I know....the eye ball test. Tried and true. Just one small problem. Whose eyeball are you using? Some eyeballs are better than others...Brad Ausmus has a better eyeball than me and I have a better eyeball than Vice (even though I'm well over 60). LOL. One guy use to tell me that he had a better eye watching a game on TV, than the coaches that were AT the game! Imagine that? (He ''eyeballed" Brennan Boesch as an equal to Andrew McCutchen, I recall)

There is no problem with that - as long as you realize that it is only YOUR eye test. However, that makes it impossible to compare him (in this case, Mr. Gose) with not only any other outfielder, but it also makes it impossible to critically discuss differing views of Gose (or any player "X") because your eyes/knowledge are not the same as anyone else. Again....that is fine. It just limits the distance you can go in discussing a player's ability oand/or comparing it to some other player's? In short your statement about Ryan Raburn is simply your view (and you are welcome to it) but it has validity in any discussion of his value, or lack of it, beyond whatever limited experience YOU have.

I agree overall with @themuzzer , I am very comfortable with Gose patrolling Centerfield. I see him as one of the best centerfielders in the league. However, I also agree that stats don't lie ... It's just that baseball (or anything) can't be judged solely on stats.

defensive stats can lie. there are just to many variable to get accurate pictures from them.

While Gose is not a weakness for the Tigers (IMO), there are at least eight CF in the AL that are probably better than he is. Plus the Twin's have a top prospect in center I'd swap for Gose.

But hey...I bet the Tribe would like to have Gose! Right buddy? wink, wink

I agree, partly. Defensive metrics are weak. They don't lie...but they can be inaccurate at time.

Statistics are not necessarily in accurate, but they don't paint the entire picture. I am not sure and statistic or group of statistics could. They cannot tell whether someone is a positive club house presence or the leadership ability of someone.

8? Really? Name them iffy. Name 8 CF you feel are better than gose in the AL.
