I'm not very excited about Salty really. He can play first, that's a small bonus.

But the guy has hit over .235 once since 2009. Don't really care if he's a switch hitter really. His bat won't be an impact for us.

But I assume that was the reasoning behind signing him. (Along with being a vet and being the only other guy on the team that can realistically fill in at first for more than an inning here and there.)

BH could be back in Detroit again, but two young soft hitting righties isn't ideal for a team that wants to compete for the division.
as a bench guy that is going to be only needed once a week.. are you expecting all star performance?

Nope.

But he'll definitely be needed more than once a week. McCann ain't catching 135 games.

tigers love to waste draft picks on family of former or current players. Castellanos brother actually looks like he might have something though... Verlander's kid brother sucks anus, Magglio's kids too.

no but he will probably catch 120-125... he caught 114 last year and wasn't even the starter to begin the year.

Let's save ourselves pages and pages of pointless back and forth Vice.

VMart is no longer capable of playing a position at an acceptable clip for any length of time. And we don't have a catcher that improves a lineup.

These aren't negative statements meant to spur you on a defensive tirade. They are unfortunate realities. Which shouldn't prevent the team from winning. But aren't ideal.

so you don't think McCann improves the lineup? I am just curious.. not arguing.. i mean... really don't expect you to think any player is good at this point... i wonder why you are even a fan as much piss as you pour on the tigers roster.

You would get along with the average Marlins fan well Smitty... all they do is piss and moan.. cry about Loria... cry about how much the stadium cost.. when most of the clowns don't even own property or don't live in Miami Dade where the tax is... cry about trades that on the regular actually end up in the Marlin's favor... the only time you find good, happy fans in Miami is at the stadium. The people that are actually ticket holders come and enjoy the team and just want to see them win but are fans regardless.

I never understood why people are so negative about a sports team. I love the Tigers, Pistons, Lions, and the Marlins have grown on me... I love to follow them and hope to see them all win championships on the regular... I get frustration.. but you go way over the top. I would love to see how many of your posts on in regards to the Lions or Tigers are either negative or sarcastic positive... Lighten up and enjoy the team... enjoy the ballparks when you go to a game.. eat a hotdog.. drink a beer... stare at some boobs... bring a friend.. it doesn't have to be negative bro... its ok.. i am here to help walk you out of the darkness and into the light.

Why would anyone think a player with an OBP under .300 and a Slugging percentage under .400 would improve a lineup? That's simply illogical.

He's a very nice defensive catcher, which is why he gets to be a Big League #1 guy.

I like McCann. Not going to kid myself into thinking his bat will be a difference maker though.

I am not arguing with you.. McCann's bat never was his calling card.. but he can most certainly be average.. which in the 8 hole is all you need. Sal Perez is not that amazing with the bat either... in fact.. name me a catcher in the al central that really is.

McCann won't necessarily improve the lineup, but he won't hurt it like, say, Alex Avila did. Yeah, Avila walks more, but he also struck out once every 2.9 PA in 2014. McCann puts bat on ball better -- one K every 4.7 PA. And if I'm not mistaken, McCann had three game-winning HR (two walk-offs) last year.

Saltalamacchia has an Avila-like BA, but does have decent power. He's hit as many as 25 in a season.

The Tigers will have a very potent lineup, and neither catcher is gonna bat higher than 7th in the order. As far as MLB catcher combos go, the Tigers could do a lot worse.

Not really motivated to look.. but Avila did have solid OBP if I remember correctly... not sure who had the better OBP, McCann or Avila... but my guess would be Avila... and OBP is important if you aren't mashing 20+ HR.

If a team has a full-time catcher (120+ games), I prefer a defense-first backup. Yes, Salty has some pop....but he isn't going to pinch hit and will only start -40 games, thus negating some of his power advantage. Add in his high strikeout rate and low BA and his offensive contribution is diluted even more. The Tigers have a potent lineup outside of the catcher position....so when McCann has a day off, I'd just as soon see a catcher in there that can possibly shut down the other teams running game and be a good pitch framer. I'm not sure Saltamacchia is that guy. (Bryan Holaday isn't either). They need a low end Yadier Molina. :)

Yes, Avila could draw walks, but he made contact so infrequently, it drove me batty.

I agree on defense-first for catchers.

That was why avila was a nice backup... he still was solid defensively.
