Detroit Tigers Ongoing 2016 Thread

Look at it this way: Two guys who play premium defense at a premium defensive position have combined for 19 HR and 71 RBI. And the Tigers are paying both players at or near the MLB minimum.

$22 Million Man Justin Upton, who plays "okay" defense at a non-premium position, has 13 HR and 46 RBI.

And Upton never got in Iggys face about being a hotdog.

(That message obviously was heard loud and clear. And prolly echoed by staff. Iggy has cut it out this year. Well, when he isn't hurt.)

If this team doesn't make it. People are going to be blaming Upton for years on end. He has been our Aubrey Huff and absolutely abysmal this season. Waste of $22 Million.

Expect a "money season" from Upton next year. He will want to see if he can better that $22.1 mil four year option HE has after 2017. Despite miamivice's guarantee that Upton would opt out of his contract after two years, it is looking like the Tigers might have to pay up on ANOTHER ill-advised contract. Well...let's put on the rose-colored glasses and either hope that Upton has a near MVP season next year and leaves, or he at least becomes a player that gets near earning $22.1mil until 2021. (yeeesh)

I know luck played a big part...but Avila Sr's 2016 page on his resume will include the statistics (and salaries) of:
1. Jordan Zimmermann
2. Mike Pelfrey
3. Justin Upton
4. Mark Lowe
5. Mike Aviles

That's $55.6 million for this year...and all except Aviles will be back for another, sometimes bigger, slice of cake.
(At least F-Rod turned out OK.).

Things don't go as planned sometimes....if Tigers don't see at least a Wild Card game. Good bye Mr. Avila and Mr. Ausmus. Not all their fault....but it is the way the game is played.

The Tigers today have acquired INF Erick Aybar from Atlanta in exchange for INF Mike Aviles and C Kade Scivicque.

Additionally, the Tigers have recalled OF Steven Moya from Triple A Toledo and he will be available for tonight’s game vs. Kansas City

According to Avila, Aybar will provide a better bat at SS and at 3B while Iglesias and Castellanos mend. However, Aybar has played ONE game of 3B in his MLB career! He probably does provide a better bat than Machado and he isn't a bad fielder. I can't help but think Iglesias is going to be out for awhile. Hell...for all I know, maybe they want to sign Aybar as a free agent and get rid of Iglesias, now that the latter is making more $ through arbitration?????

As for the young catcher. Trade Rumors said he may not have the bat to make it as a MLB starting catcher.

Kinsler will need to ''sit'' out a few games with a severe case of anal warts. Dixon Machado will move to 2b.
