The problem with promoting Moya is that he is not a good bench player. Lousy defense. Can play only one position - not counting DH. I would keep Moya in AAA, playing every day unless/until VMart or an outfielder goes down for the Tigers. He needs playing time, not a once a week start in LF.

Collins? A better bench player and can play all three OF spots (maybe not real well, but I'd guess better than Aviles and Romine). Not much of a hitter for that matter...batting .222 in Toledo. So would he be that great of an upgrade over Aviles?

Perhaps, looking in-house, someone like Chad Huffman or Casey McGehee would be better selection. Both can play a couple of positions and are hitting over .300 in Toledo. Problem...they are not on 40 man roster...so someone on the 40-man would need to go.

Possibility? Tigers do nothing until the end of July and add someone near the trade deadline. (Don't forget - Detroit can dangle Buck Farmer as a trade chip :) )

As you stated, no one from the Romine - Aviles - Collins - Moya - Gose contingent is going to make or break the Tigers this year. I suspect if they are in contention and make any deadline moves in July, it will be for pitching. The Tigers are currently 2nd in AL batting average and 4th in runs scored, but are 12th in pitching. They'll need to address their bigger weakness.

Interesting stat brought up on AL Central Board. While the Tigers lead the Tribe in most offensive categories, including BA and OPS....Detroit has scored only THREE runs more than the Indians. Without looking, I'd guess the Tigers lags well behind Clev in their BA with RISP. (As doug would say....Tigers are lacking HEART!)

I have not looked, but I wonder if there is a player out there that can play decent 3B/1B and has enough offense to be a threat when put in once a week, or for defensive purpose? If there is, Romine's value would be - NONE. Probably no such animal available however...thus the abundance of Romine-types in MLB.

Cleveland also has 7 fewer home runs, lower OBP and lower SLG% than the Tigers, so it is a bit strange. BA w/RISP may well tilt in the Indians favor. One other thing I noticed is that Cleveland strikes out less and has twice as many stolen bases than Detroit (40 to 20).

How many outs has Cleveland ran into? We've been caught stealing the same amount. I really think Dave Clark has hurt this team. (Not the stolen bases part, but running on the left side of the infield.)

Valid point. It also doesn't help that some of the best OBP guys on the Tigers currently (V-mart, Cabrera, Castellanos) are also slowpoke baserunners. I suspect Cleveland scores a lot more guys from second base on singles than we do.

Absolutely.

Not much when it comes to wheels aside from when the lineup turns over. And Iggy, when on base, is going to be on first almost always.

Really hope Maybin returns healthy, we need that speed.

Tigers' Cameron Maybin: Expected back Friday

by RotoWire Staff

Maybin (wrist) is expected to return to the lineup Friday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Per manager Brad Ausmus, Maybin received an anti-inflammatory shot in his wrist Wednesday after he was held out of the lineup for a second straight game while dealing with some soreness. Detroit has an off day Thursday, so it appears as though there's a chance Maybin will be able to return to the lineup without missing any more time.

Iffy I remember you lecturing me a number of years ago that the 24th and 25th player on the tiger roster was not going to cost them a playoff spot or win them a playoff spot. You seem fairly fixated on these people this year.

Detroit Tigers
RHP Mike Pelfrey (1-5, 4.76 ERA)

New York Yankees
LHP C.C. Sabathia (3-4, 2.58 ERA)

The Tigers embark on a challenging 10-game road trip that has them playing three against the Yankees this weekend, three vs. the White Sox Monday-Wednesday and four at the Royals Thursday-Sunday. Detroit is tied for second place with Kansas City in the AL Central, three games behind first-place Cleveland. The White Sox are in fourth place, but only a half-game behind the Tigers and Royals.
Despite earlier struggles against left-handed pitchers, the Tigers have won four straight against southpaw starters.

No not fixated....just amazed that Detroit could collect these guys. Almost seems like a "plan". Sure...even if Detroit keeps Romine, Aviles - and McCann and Salty struggle to hit their weight...they won't determine if the Tigers win anything. Sure they might cost the team a game or two or three along the way....but I would think Upton, Sanchez, Pelfrey, and Lowe have (and will?) make a much larger impact.

We need him NOW! Tigers draft Kyle FUNKHOUSER out of Lousiville in the fourth round. They NEED the Funkhouser. I can see it now...The Farmer and The Funk, down in the bullpen.

Pelfrey kinda meh, but it didn't matter with tonight's putrid offense.
