Detroit Tigers are getting slammed by some reporters for their selecting pitchers in the first two rounds that project out to be relievers in the future. Tigers need relief help, but the past history of selecting relief pitchers early in the draft is not a good one.

If guys like keith law (who by the way loved the 08 draft of relievers which produced nothing pitching wise) don't like the draft, then it's good for me. DD is drafting college pitchers that can be brought up quickly and contribute. They may not be # 1,s or 2's but Tigers are in a win now situation and not looking for HS kids that might take 3 or years to reach the bigs. These so called experts need to realize that teams like the yanks/Tigers/Sox etc are not on the Royals/Astros 5-7 year plan and as such have a different philosophy for the draft. By the way law's bottom 2 organizations for last season were the Tigers and the Giants. Well I believe they played in the final series of the season.

This all sounds reasonable and logical.

Tigers also picked up Ben Verlander OF in the 14th round......I'm sure some nepotism is there but I'm sure that tells leaders like JV and Fielder (cecil) that the organization is also a family.

actually JV's brother is a pretty decent prospect. ths season was his first as full time position player after pitching full time his first season and splitting his second. Hit 367 with 37 rbi in 53 games. So I wouldn't be calling this a nepotism pick. Now the question remains will JV get an actual MLB hit before his little brother does ?

I'm only saying nepotism in the respect that we did draft him and it was the 14th round. I'm just curious where he would have went if we didn't get him. How many rounds would have went by?

wow. JL has his closer valverde in with a 2 run lead and a clean inning. But, Smyly warming up in the pen. Not showing much confidence IMO.

The tigers need to find a closer whether it be from within or on the trade market. Valverde is not the answer and they cannot go into the playoffs again this year expecting he is. Also Putkonen sucks.

I liked JL's comments about valverde yesterday when valverde gave up those two home runs. Something along the line of he was happy with the performance because valverde didn't walk a batter, lol. I'm sorry but if you are allowing two home runs you are performing very poorly.

So what happened to shaneman or whatever his name was? I distinctly remember many of the tigers fans over here saying he wouldn't be around in July and him saying he would...tigers fans know baseball, I think every one of us knew what was in store for the Indians this year and its happening before our eyes. They have masterson and Michael bourne and beyond that....who? No one. I still like the royals or white sox to finish second in the division.

Well it is the usual cleveland swoon, when they realized that they were still the Indians. Their starting pitching is lacking. After the series in detroit they go to texas. It is possible after this road trip they are behind the twins.

Tigers out class the Indians again. valverde does his best to blow it again...Leyland would have let him..

rumors are getting stronger of tigers trading for J papelbon.

Tigers picked 2 nice pitchers in the draft. the kid from Florida looked good even though he has a 3-5 record this year... he beat the Cuban team in international play. and has thrown a no hitter before.

also they have a good left hander.

plus 1 pitcher who WAS a closer..only because his college teamneeded a closer. he will be back at starting ...
so it was a good draft for the Tigers.

For some reason Papelbon seems right......Not that I like it but it seems right......I don't know why.
