Hey Hey lookie there... Leyland is actually playing LiL Mig instead of Kelly against a righty... Is Kelly injured?
Detroit Tigers are getting slammed by some reporters for their selecting pitchers in the first two rounds that project out to be relievers in the future. Tigers need relief help, but the past history of selecting relief pitchers early in the draft is not a good one.
If guys like keith law (who by the way loved the 08 draft of relievers which produced nothing pitching wise) don't like the draft, then it's good for me. DD is drafting college pitchers that can be brought up quickly and contribute. They may not be # 1,s or 2's but Tigers are in a win now situation and not looking for HS kids that might take 3 or years to reach the bigs. These so called experts need to realize that teams like the yanks/Tigers/Sox etc are not on the Royals/Astros 5-7 year plan and as such have a different philosophy for the draft. By the way law's bottom 2 organizations for last season were the Tigers and the Giants. Well I believe they played in the final series of the season.
Tigers also picked up Ben Verlander OF in the 14th round......I'm sure some nepotism is there but I'm sure that tells leaders like JV and Fielder (cecil) that the organization is also a family.
actually JV's brother is a pretty decent prospect. ths season was his first as full time position player after pitching full time his first season and splitting his second. Hit 367 with 37 rbi in 53 games. So I wouldn't be calling this a nepotism pick. Now the question remains will JV get an actual MLB hit before his little brother does ?
