Valverde isn't our closer....According to JL and every website you travel to, he's the closer.

I watch him pitch....He's far from a closer.....He's junk......

Smyly would be a much better option......I still don't get how a manager pulls Max that is just destroying the O's For 30 pitches and a blown save by Valverde......Just let Max finish it out for fuck sake. I'm sure he could have done it in 15 pitches...

I'm not sold on smyly quite yet but I'm really closer. I agree keep the starter in.

closer spot. is a sore spot. will be all year. we all knew it from game 1. good thing we don't have to worry much about the regular season. not like the Indians are a threat..
but in the post season. he could be a problem.

Leyland is a idiot

i get relly tired of hearing a manager get blamed for a player's failure. If you guys are so much better at managing than Leyland...why didn't you complain about using him when he saved a game? With the expert knowledge some of you claim to have...why haven't you been speaking up before now? Why do you wait until after there has been a failure to jump on 'the blame Leyland' bandwagon? Didn't you see this coming? Or did you only see it AFTER the problem aroused. (Oops, sorry, muzz did blame those extra inning, 1-0 loses to the Pirates on the pen and Leyland. Only he knows why.)

Fielder isn't hitting, VMart has been a failure, Jackson and Hunter hurt, the team still has no speed and poor range in the field, the bullpen is very shaky....and NOW is the time to blame ALL of this on Leyland?

Catch a clue gentlemen....this team has some major problems that they need to overcome. Perhaps JL isn't the guy to address all of them. But if the teams hitting and starting pitching don't perform at their peaks....the post-season will be a question mark. Of course, you can always take the lazy way out and blame the manager for everything.

how about if we wait until the closer lets 4 runs in to blow the game? maybe after the first 2 or 3 hitters..Leyland should have known valverde didn't have it... think about that one biffy

Just a thought. The Tiger starting pitchers have been great at racking up strikeouts. I wonder, however, if it wouldn't be better if they could/would pitch more to contact in order to go deeper into the game. Detroit's bullpen is not good....the fewer innings they pitch, the better off the team would be. Leading the league in Ks is flashy....but is it really the best thing for a team that has a questionable bullpen? EX: Scherzer gives up only 3 hits and a couple of walks...but he has to throw 120 pitches to get thru 8 innings. Verlander hitting 100 pitches to go 6 innings, etc.

if you knew...the CBS message boards.. Leyland was blamed for the last 2 years.

the guy doesn't know when to pull a pitcher. he sets down players at dumb times.
he never calls a player out. he let Raburn drag this team down for 2 years before he thought maybe the guy couldn't do the job. never mind raburn couldn't go to the plate with out the whole stadium booing him like cheating buckeye

pitch to contact... that's what people who know nothing about pitching always mention. its a myth. Tigers just need a few arms in the bull pen and a manager that knows how to use a bull pen.. Leyland will let Coke blow about 5 more games before this bum is only used in limited use against left hand hitters

Seems like other pitchers have accomplished keeping their pitch counts down. Are you saying Verlander and the others aren't good enough to adjust?

So...Leyland went out and got all these pitchers in the pen? Does he get credit for getiing Cabrera, Fielder, Jackson, Hunter? lol

As I said ....Monday morning quarterbacking. Mouth shut when they win....blame the manager when they lose.

doug...please, go to EVERY other team board here. I will bet you any amount of money that you will find a group of fans claiming that THEIR manager is the worst in baseball. It is the lazy man's shortcut.

I don't monday QB....Leyland sucks and is a moron.....I've been saying it for years......Raburn sucked, Inge Sucked.......This isn't monday QB ......This is saying that JL is a fuck stick running 2 years in a row.

The guy will suck tomorrow before he even puts the lineup card in.

He's so blind he would put Valverde in tomorrow if given the chance......Meanwhile Smyly has cobb webs hang off his jersey....

I don't care to hear about innings pitched.....Its a phantom stat. JV can toss over 200 yet Smyly can't have over 60 (without taxing the pen) it's a myth.

Muzz....you have no credibility because you simply pick a person to dislike and wait until things go wrong - then claim you "knew it all along". If you are so knowledgeable - why did you back Boesch? And if you know so much, why did you resort to latching on to Inge and Raburn as being the Tiger's biggest problems last year? Do you really think that you had some "scoop" that Inge and Raburn weren't that good? Did you really think you were going out on a limb by claiming that Raburn sucked? You were the guy everyone snickered about because you could not figure out that the real problem concerning Inge and Raburn was Dombrowski!!! DD sat on his thumbs for months doing nothing about the (minor) problem at 2B. What did you want Leyland to do....he had to play someone at 2B.

But OK....everyone is entitled to their view here (except me). Let's concede that Leyland is an awful manager. Why don't DD and Illitch replace him? Since you claim to have known Leyland was a bum for two years, how stupid must DD and the owner be to have kept JL around???!!!

Now, I won't ask you who you would pick to replace Leyland - because you'll just say, "anyone would be better than Leyland"....but I would add this....I'd bet every penny I have that you will be blaming whomever replaces Leyland, the minute the team starts losing.

BTW muzz....your rant makes no sense, concerning innings pitched. Smyly could pitch over 200 innings a year....if you used him once every five days as a starter. Are you suggesting that Smyly try and pitch 200 innings out of the pen? He'd have to pitch at least every other day and go 2-3 innings each time he pitched. It would be a good research question....what is the most innings ever thrown by a reliever during one season? I know Mike Marshall threw over 100 a time or two....but 200?

Muzz...I stand corrected. Mike Marshall pitched 208 innings (106 games) in 1974. So I guess, if Smyly has the conditioning of Mike Marshall...he could do it. Wow....he appeared in 106 games!!! That is almost 2 out of every three games. And he had to throw more than one inning each time!!! A pitching machine!

Leyland has way to much love for his veterans or his guys! So much so he will be rearranging the deck chairs on the ship as it sinks just to accommodate the Valverdes, the Inges, the Rayburns, Scheffields, and Kellys he has taken a liking to.

Valverde jumped the shark last season and their was a reason all other teams took a pass on him when bullpen help is at a premium! But no the Tigers brain trust decide that he is worth another chance! Just pathetic!

As he has blown 2 saves and very well could have twice as many I think the Tigers should be looking to make a change some how some way. This was very poor planning by Leyland and Dave D. With all the FA setup guys they should have had a backup plan if Rondon failed!

If JL likes Valverde so much....why wasn't he signed during the winter? Is it possible that the real mistake was done by Dombrowski? Since JL is at fault for getting Valverde onto the team (again)....I wonder how much CREDIT we should give him for getting Fielder, Cabrera, Hunter, Vmart, etc on the team. Appears that he is only given "credit" for the players who don't perform well. Last year, he was given negative "credit" for choosing Inge, Raburn, Worth, and Santiago to play 2B...when he could have chosen.......oh yeah, those were his choices!

burf....I use the mental ignore button on some. However, I understand that some people need 'attachments' to help them...not having the mental acuity to do it themselves. It is fortunate that things like ignore buttons are available for the weak and simple minded.
