The Detroit Tigers acquired reliever Jose Veras from the Houston Astros today for minor league outfielder Danry Vazquez and a player to be named later.

Detroit will need to make a spot for him on the active roster (a relief pitcher will most certainly be sent down to AAA). They had an open spot on their 40-man roster (due to the long-term injury to Octavio Dotel), so they do not need to shuffle their 40-man roster.

Veras was the closer for the Astros and was having a good season. He saved 19 games and had a 2.93 ERA.

A good (if not spectacular) trade. If Benoit stumbles, they now have someone with closer experience. If DD can land a good lefty for the pen, I'd be satisfied.....pending Peralta's outcome.

burf....knowing you are a big Peralta fan...what do you expect Jhonny to do if he gets a 50 game suspension? Will he do the 'team' thing and lawyer up to delay the suspension...or go the more selfish route and accept his penalty now to keep his free agency contract from being dinged?

I'll toss one name out there as a possiblity. Veras from Houston. SD has some good stuff too. I hope we get some pen help. Who knows, Maybe be make a big splash and get our SS for next year.

We can all agree Peralta shouldnt/won't be our Starter next year for a few reasons.

Bout as anxious as we are to keep listening to you over and over about how bad JV is.....tell us how JV wont start in the playoffs? I found tht kind of funny. Thinking ricky would start over JV in the playoffs. Tell us again how the tigers have not played to their potential again....how they have the same record as the yanks....oops not anymore. Only thing im anxious about is someone finally hitting that age where he isnt able to type and stalk and spew negativity over and over every day. I agree that Johnny will appeal it. Detroit will take care of him in other ways if he takes one for the team.
