Started playing pickup games during High School and continued until my early 30's when I blew out my knee, since then I only shoot around at the gym.

About the same here but I blew out my knee when 20. I was fresh off of my ACL revision when I got custody of my son. Our church's youth group decided to have a "old bulls vs young pups" game and my boy talked me into playing. It had been a over a decade since I did anything athletic … excepting attempting to walk while inebriated … but I donned my DonJoy sports brace and went at it. We destroyed them. The next day I could not even tie my boots and at work I had to climb on a heat treating furnace that had no ladders. I got on top of it barely and could not climb back down. When I got home my son asked if it was worth it. I asked him if there was any doubt in his mind that an old men in bad shape would whip his and his buddies asses. It was worth it.

I loved that Stackhouse McGinnis and Sheed UNC team. One of Dean Smith’s last teams
They weren't the most talented but used to love watching those Illini teams in the 80s with Battle, Barto, etc. A bunch of flying 6-7" guys.

They actually were the most talented team back then. Kendall Gill Nick Anderson Kenny Battle Marcus Liberty Steve Bardo. They beat that national champion Michigan team 2 times in 1988 I believe but lost in the final 4.

I still watch most Illini b-ball games and still keep up with recruiting. They finally seem to be coming out of the dark and should be a lot better this year. I was at the 2005 ncaa championship game against UNC in St. Louis

You would think Illinois would have a more consistently good team as the biggest University with Chicago in state.

I was a three year starter on the varsity basketball team.

Yeah it’s puzzling. Big time coaches pulling the mega talent but plenty of other talent to choose from — especially the kids that make it all 4 years which imo is an advantage.

That Loyola Chicago team was a good example. But the Illini are on the way back up. Young and could be scary here soon

I did not make varsity basketball until my senior year. Even then the reason I was given was "you are not athletic enough to play, but you do all the right things without the ball so we need you in practice."

Then I spent that year as an object lesson in practice, every rebound I got was a teammate getting chewed out.....I was not well liked.

I sucked. Even though I was always quick and athletic otherwise, I couldn't/can't shoot worth a damn and I'm 5'10" so that really limited my effectiveness. I enjoyed playing, though, but I sucked and never even tried to play organized ball.

High school, junior college and 2 years at NAIA. Back then I was a 6'7/190 and a 3 ball chucker. Never touched the paint unless it was a break away dunk or getting the rare rebound. Now I'm 6'7"/250 and I never leave the paint. My Dirk one foot fade away is on point at the Y.

I played from about 6th through 8th grades, when most of us were still the same height. Then, everybody else hit their growth spurt and I was too small, too slow. Could not even make JV at our very small high school.

But I liked playing so much that I hoisted a backboard in our backyard and cleared out a space for about a half court. I had to dig the hole and pour the concrete myself for the backboard/post. I spent hours out there alone, dribbling, shooting, working on rebounds. Never played competitively again.

Hey somebody had to be picked last and that would be me.
Good ball handler just looking to pass the ball to the shooters.
After a while the other team would figure it out and cover all but me to make me shoot.
Klang, off the rim.

Dean's last few UNC teams were stacked with talent

he retired when he still had Vince Carter and Jamison on the roster

played through high school and rec leagues through college. 4 years varsity, starting PG my junior and senior year - made all league junior year and got hurt senior year so that hindered my season and quite frankly, that sucked. We still made the D3 state finals senior year and lost to a team from Boston (defending champs) from a high school with 2k+ kids, whereas there were only 70 kids in my graduating class. We were up by 1 about halfway through the 2nd half then they went on a run and beat us by 12 or so - 25 years ago and still hurts!!
