Chipper was never really that much of a leader until the later stages of his career, but he volunteered to play left field when we had a chance to get Vinny Castilla(though in hindsight, I wish he would have refused. He ruined his legs in left field and Castilla was ultimately a bust)

Because those handful of guys are assholes. In some cases, these writers have said afterwards that they did think the people they voted against were deserving of HoF, but voted against them because they knew their colleagues would vote them in. So enough of them are talking to each other that they’re influencing votes. Other times, some have said no one deserves entry on the first ballot and take it upon themselves to deliberately block that unanimous vote. Not, you know, actually deciding based upon stats or anything.

My guess is, Rivera was unanimous, only because some writers probably screwed up and didn’t read each other’s emails (by accident).

Usually players do not get 100% because there are other worthy candidates that some writers use their ballots to include - knowing that a player is already guaranteed 75%...

Beltran's first year. His numbers are HOF worthy but the scandal might doom his HOF chances. After him, the highest WAR among first timers is John Lackey.

Holding the current classes to that standard is idiocy. Hell, it wasn't until the 13th vote that someone who got in the top 20 total votes on a ballot didn't make the Hall.

The Hall doesn't have a "first-ballot" wing or a unanimous wing. At this point, it's just a manufactured distinction to get people to pay attention to specific sportswriters.

I just don't think it matters if they get 80% or 100%.... And, as a Boston fan, I have hated seeing Jeter overrated for his entire career... He'd definitely crack my top ten, but there are some fans that think he's the greatest all time....

Beats me. Not saying he should be given a free pass (I think Ortiz's HOF case is pretty borderline tbh), but I also don't care about PEDs. Bonds/Clemens not being in is a travesty and I expect A-Rod to get the same bullshit treatment. I'd put McGwire and Raffy in, though I think Sosa's borderline. But given the lack of coverage around Ortiz and the postseason narrative, I expect him to get in the HOF pretty easily.
