Well that's fine too if you're just talking shit. I just like the comp. I think they are both in the top 5 all-time 3rd basemen. And I think the Boggs/Brett/Jones group is a fun debate. I think Schmidt and Mathews are 1 and 2.

Brett hit for a better average than Chipper, and considering the era in which the two played, the gap compared to their peers is even larger for Brett. As far as power, once again taking into account the era in which they played, Brett was better than the average 3rd baseman in the league than Chipper was.

I think Boggs goes to the back of the list in that comparison.

I'm obviously biased, Chipper is my all time favorite player, so I'd take Chipper over Brett, just barely though.

But OPS+ takes the eras into account, and Chipper's is higher.

Plus in a tight race, more often than not, I'm gonna lean towards the more modern player.

That .320 average probably got him. But he rightfully never comes up when discussing the all time greats at 3B.

Rabbit Maranville has my vote for worst HOFer.
Rick Ferrell wasn't even the best player in his own family

Career-wise, yes. But Brett's 16 year prime he had a 146 OPS+ while Chipper had a 13-year prime of 148.

Plus we aren't taking into account defense, which would give an edge to Brett there as well. I would agree and move Boggs to the back of that pack.

His brother wasn't that good.

But, I'd take Ferrell over Maranville and his .258 average and 86 OPS+.

He must have been the Ozzie Smith of the 10's and 20's.

Brett was before my time, but I've never really heard of him being an elite defensive 3B.

I don't have an issue with Brett being ranked ahead of Chipper, but I'd take Chipper.

I think his brother is underrated. He played in the 30s so his raw ERA is inflated. 7 seasons he was top 10 in ERA. But, he was also a very good hitting pitcher. He had a 9-year prime where he hit .284/.351/.451/.802 over 1200+ plate appearances.

I don't think he was Schmidt-level, but advanced stats seem to rank him over Chipper by a decent margin. That's all I'm really going by.

I believe it was here, or maybe on the old ESPN boards, where we did HOF ballots through history. Put them together and voted. If I remember correctly, Wes Ferrell was a looooooong discussion.

The issue however is that OPS+ is often going to be affected by longevity, which tends to hurt the ones who played more/longer.

If Brett retired 2 years earlier (where he'd have roughly the same amount of career PAs as Chipper did), his career OPS+ goes from 135 to 140 (right near Chipper's 141).

Without looking it up, I'd assume the league OPS for the NL was higher during Chipper's prime than it was for the AL in Brett's prime with the whole steroid era and everything.

Plus the thing about Jeter is he had no personality.

He wasn't knocking up Hooters waitresses or murdering illegal immigrants on his south Texas ranch and making it appear the victim died of dehydration.
