If Ortiz gets in before Edgar that's crap. Edgar was the best DH in the MLB. 5/6 years he had an OPS of 1.000+ and the only non year was still .993. That's simply incredible, production at all times.

Yah Ortiz had more homeruns, but that's because he batted for .27 points lower than Martinez which is HUGE. Edgar prob. could've slammed just as many HRs but chose to bat for more average. Fenway is also a hitter friendly park whereas Safeco is not.

And don't give me world series rings. NFL/MLB rings should be discredited. The teams are FAR too large for one superstar to have an influence. NBA/NHL fine... one superstar can nearly carry a team.

he played a majority of his career in the kingdome...not safeco.

the kingdome was a launching pad. shit..now that i think about it, was safeco even open then? he retired in 2004.

Oh that's a good point. Safeco opened in 99 and he was still playing. 99 and 2000 he posted two of those 1+ OPS so he was still killing it. Still a good point though, that does draw it a bit closer.

dont get me wrong, edgar was a heck of a hitter. he was just a different kind of hitter vs ortiz.

he walked over 90 times, 7 times
fanned no more than 99

on base machine

career high 37 HR (a very odd year for him btw)...outside of that year?

29 bombs

not overwhelming power

you mention "years over a 1.000 OPS"

ortiz - 4
edgar - 5

Ortiz is an idiot, or he is surrounded by idiot PR people.

Anything he voluntarily says or writes that includes any combination of the the words "tested", "fail", "positive", "PED", or "steroids" is ill-advised.

This.

Would you vote for Carlos Delgado??

Don't know. Maybe? I haven't really considered it.

If his stats are a mirror of Ortiz's, I would put Ortiz over Delgado because of the "extras" that Rock Strongo has mentioned.

Problem is, if the writers association doesn't lighten up on suspected juicers, nothing Ortiz has done or was a part of will matter anyway.

he played at safeco for 4.5 seasons.

and his road stats speak for themselves. as somebody else pointed out, he hit lots of singles and doubles. homers weren't how he made his money.

Again i'm not trying to take anything away from edgar. I saw him hit. I know what his game was. I already said he and ortiz have completely different approaches.

My opinion is in his overall body of work, ortiz is the superior dh.

Postseason

.266 w an .873 ops for edgar. Good enough but a drop off.

.295 w a .962 ops for ortiz...and all those walkoffs, and 3 rings.

those extras might benefit ortiz over delgado... But how about the fact that delgado actually played the other half of the game...

Didn't Ortiz admit that me might have taken steroids back when he was still in the Dominican? Seems I recall him saying that about the time Manny got busted.

And for the record, I'm in the boat that says the best way to pit the steroid era behind you is induct the players with worthy stats into the HOF, put the roiders in their own section, I don't care, but just put them in the Hall and move forward.

But Ortiz was a DH and shouldn't be in the HOF. Fielding is half the game.

The contributions to player value aren't 50/50 however when looking at offense and defense...all other things being equal, a guy who's an A hitter but a D fielder is worth more than a guy who's a D hitter and A fielder.

I mean, a guy like Brendan Ryan isn't of equal value to a guy like Ortiz simply because both each is terrific at only one part of the game while sucking at the other.

Eh, the way I see it is if you wanna play baseball, learn how to use a glove. Being a D fielder is better than being no fielder at all IMO. Hell, first base is the position where all your expected to do is catch balls thrown your way and field balls hit within a step of you if you can hit. It's hard for me to get behind a guy that rides the pine the entire game until his turn to bat for HOF consideration.

I'm also opposed to closers getting in the HOF, and they get in.

I won't bitch much if Ortiz and Martinez get in, but if I had a vote, they wouldn't get my vote.
