I figure Pens fans can't see or hear me with all the Cup rings in their eyes and ears (lol)

Oh, we can see you. We use two to plug our ears, and the other two we wear, because they're just prettier that way.

He was getting shit on prior to him signing his extension but he signed it anyway. Didn't seem to bother him much.

I may be remembering wrong but I don't remember him catching anywhere near as much shit in the earlier seasons as he did in the last couple. The bullshit really seemed to me to begin when the media wanted someone to blame for the playoff misses after the brief taste of them that came right before Phil re-signed.

It was worse later on but he was definitely blamed for a lot of the problems prior to the Carlyle era. Keep in mind that with Burke's moves a lot of Leaf fans, right or wrong, expected to contend. They didn't and Kessel was the easiest target for obvious reasons, mostly that they gave up what wound up being a franchise centre and a top pair defenceman to get him.

I don't know if any of those "report card" type things that writers do are still online from a few years ago but like I said, I remember things a little differently.

Phaneuf sure, he was getting blame and criticism over pretty much his entire tenure.

Usually it's easy to blame the Leaf dans for doing what they're best at (taking any topic and making it about the Leafs), but this one was my bad.

I think I heard last night that even with the 7.5 million Datsyuk infusion, the Coyotes are still not at the cap floor.

Meanwhile back to Dats, damned if Holland didn't dump his capspace.

Wings unload Datsyuk cap hit in Arizona trade

Can't be mad at Holland for that move... Clears $7.5M in dead cap money to become a legit contender for top free agents and adds another 2nd round pick - all to move down only four spots in the first round. Short-term, this appears to be a major steal.

There is a scenario that could play out that could make this a bad move in the long run, though. If Chychrun, Fabbro or Stanley develop into an annual Norris candidate and Cholowski never makes the NHL coupled with Holland striking out swinging in free agency again. (see Parise & Suter (2012); Boyle, Strahlman & Niskanen (2014))

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the next week. The obvious prize is Stamkos, but adding Backus or Ladd (team leaders who battle for dirty net front goals) would be strong consolation prizes if they lose out on Stamkos.

Seriously it is a very good move for Holland. It shows how desperate some teams will be to get to the cap Floor.
