Still possible, cap floor teams may do it. Pronger plays for Arizona now, and Marc Savard was on the Panthers and now the Devils. Dead cap space can be moved, but it has to come with incentive. And with that big of a cap hit I'd think the Wings could only move part of it in addition to sweetening the deal. Not ideal at all.
Shero talking to Holland....a number one sounds about right for that hit.

Their #1 is one of the few attractive assets Detroit has in their arsenal to move for immediate help on the roster. If they package that with Datsyuk they're just shooting themselves in the foot.

But at the same time, I don't know that it matters much because it may take just that to move this deal.

I wish one of the GMs would show a real sense of humo(u)r and acquire all of the contracts. I want to see Datsyuk, Pronger, Horton, and Savard (are there any others I'm forgetting?) on the same team.

I said in another thread, Devils have Savard and Clowe. Add Datsyuk to that imaginary line that would've been great in 2009.

He's gone, he's gone
Detroit, Detroit
They're gonna run out of cap space
He's gone, he's gone
Detroit, Detroit
They'd trade with the devil to replace him
He's gone, and he's gone
Oh why, what went wrong?

How many teams can 1) afford the cap hit and 2) have an owner willing to spend that kind of money for a draft pick + prospects? Sincere question, I'm not aware of every ownership situation. The Devs have a new group, don't they?

I know Buffalo could swing it, but I can't speak to too many others.

/Could still fit Stamkos in there too :D

Speaking of Stammer...there's been a lot of links about him to the Wings, and how the hell that's supposed to happen is beyond me. Of course if they move Dats' money I guess they'll have plenty of space. Still, I'm assuming Stamkos gets $10M/yr minimum.

I would expect $10.5M AAV as the absolute minimum. Kane and Toews get $10.5M each and Kopitar is getting $10M. I'm guessing Stamkos wants to be the highest paid player in the league.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see 7 years/$75-80M plus a full NMC.

I know it's all about timing of a contract ending...but man he's not worth that much. Well, I guess he's worth that much to the right team. To a team like Buffalo (who will sell their soul for him) he's worth every cent. Then again, Kopitar getting $10M is madness to me too.

Most of the contracts seem like madness to me. I guess there's a reason I'm not a GM (besides the complete lack of qualifications).

I don't think Stamkos is worth being the highest paid player in the game, but he's also bound by the 7/8 year limit that didn't exist when OV and Crosby were signing their mega deals. Those guys definitely deserve to be making more, but they were able to bring the cap hit down slightly by adding so many years onto it.

Do you think he will get more than Toews and Kane?

Even though it's absurd, I think he will merely because he's going to the open market. There's a handful of teams with the cap space to do it and the need. Tampa Bay, Toronto, Buffalo, Detroit (if they move Datsyuk), maybe a few other dark horses? That alone is going to drive the price up. I could see Buffalo going a bit nuts with a deal, not that Stamkos would necessarily take it.

I guess all it takes is one team to make the offer. The injury factor may come into play a bit. Teams having to work to get to the cap floor tend to not be doing well financially, and may be a little scared off to promise a guy that much $$ if the injury risk is there. But I guess there is always insurance.

How are you defining nuts here? Personally, I think something like 7/$75M is more than he should get paid, but I think that's what he's likely to get on the open market.

See, but in this case the main teams vying for his services are pretty financially sound, right? Tampa I can't really speak to, but he's their guy, so they'll be involved regardless. Toronto, Buffalo, and Detroit all have owners willing to spend and in a position to spend a bit recklessly.
