Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy bacon
It will be interesting to see how much the Flames pay for the Gaudreau and Monahan duo. I hope they can get the two of them for a combined 14 to 15 million.
Well, a step below nuts maybe. I could see them offering 7/$80M+. I think he could be a huge deal for a team kinda looking for it's face. There's Eichel, who was good but not spectacular in his first year. I just see Pegula wanting to take a bit of a reckless swing for the fences. How are you defining nuts here? Personally, I think something like 7/$75M is more than he should get paid, but I think that's what he's likely to get on the open market.
I wouldn't expect to see it go substantially over $80M from any team (except Tampa, since they can add an extra year). Upper max I'd say would be $11.5M AAV.Well, a step below nuts maybe. Not to sound like a homer, but I think if an offer like that came in from Buffalo, Toronto, and Detroit, he'd most likely pick Buffalo. I don't think he's interested in the media attention that would come in Toronto and - again, sorry if there's homer glasses here - but I think Buffalo will be better than Detroit in another year or two and he might recognize that as his better chance to win.
But his agent sure as hell could use it to drive up bidsEven though it's absurd, I think he will merely because he's going to the open market. There's a handful of teams with the cap space to do it and the need. Tampa Bay, Toronto, Buffalo, Detroit (if they move Datsyuk), maybe a few other dark horses? That alone is going to drive the price up. I could see Buffalo going a bit nuts with a deal, not that Stamkos would necessarily take it.
Toronto is surprisingly low on cap space too, considering how terrible they were last year. Horton's LTIR relief will help, but they'd be in it a bit if they offered Stamkos $10M+ per.Of the teams I think with the best chances (BUF, DET, TOR), I actually think BUF and TOR are in slightly better spots than Detroit, simply because of their healthy prospect pools. That said, I'm not sure how patient he wants to be. If he wants to win, he'll stay in Tampa Bay. They're very, very, very good. Toronto obviously has a pull for the hometown factor, but I'm not fully convinced that the Leafs really want to go crazy with a Stamkos deal. They'll be in the game, definitely, but they'll definitely be risking losing other young talent if they put that kinda deal on the books. And everything that's been said by their front office recently has been preaching more patience. May just be a smoke screen of course. I dunno, if I had to rank where he ends up, I'll put Tampa on the top of the list still, Toronto in second and closely behind Buffalo. Not convinced Detroit is a player in this one.

1) I think Buffalo's roster as is is already primed to be better than Detroit next year. Detroit has maybe two high-skill players in development including Young Crosby. I can't see them being an attractive destination to anyone right now.I wouldn't expect to see it go substantially over $80M from any team (except Tampa, since they can add an extra year). I would expect them to move some of those guys for sure, but they're going to have to give up picks or prospects to make it happen too, which could get interesting. They are, but they also can make some moves since they have young, cheap talent they could rely on, if they so choose. Lupul, Laich, JvR, Michalek, Greening. Heck, it's likely they move these guys anyway, since they have to, you know, have a defense core. So for this year, it's possible. Where they could get in trouble is a few years down the road. Nylander and Gauthier are up for RFA after 2018, then basically all their prospects are up after 2019.

Horton is LTIR and Robidas is IR. That's $8.3 mil gone right there.Toronto is surprisingly low on cap space too, considering how terrible they were last year. Horton's LTIR relief will help, but they'd be in it a bit if they offered Stamkos $10M+ per.

2) If Toronto and Buffalo are offering similar terms to Stamkos and those are his two final choices there is no way he's passing on Toronto. Just in a business sense alone it is so much more logical to come to T.O and take advantage of the sponsor money that is sure to follow.
Is there any limit as to how much a team can LTIR?Horton is LTIR and Robidas is IR. That's $8.3 mil gone right there.
If Lupul is hurt they can IR his ass too and that's another $5.2 mil.
Tyler Bozak is likely to be traded. That's $4.2 mil.
That's another $17.7 mil in cap space that even if they add a salary or two leaves them rather comfortable. They could probably find a buyer for Komarov too if need be which would free up another $3 mil, and I didn't even mention JVR (because any move for him would see a d-man with salary returning).
Hearing the Isles might be in on Stamkos as well. That's from NY outlets and media though....any one else suggest that too or am I just seeing through a homer lens?
And then there's this. Seeing as how this year is essentially a "close the gap" year, they really don't need to worry about the cap. They won't be buyers at the deadline even if they grab Stammer, a 1D and 1G.But seeing as the Laich, Michalek, Greening deals all come off the books next year, the Leafs could make things work this offseason and basically plan for 2017.
I'd greatly doubt this, and haven't heard them mentioned at all.
As far as I'm aware, no.Is there any limit as to how much a team can LTIR?
Okay. I know what I read on the Isles side of things...just like to hear it from other outlets too. The Isles beat writer is usually 'where there's smoke there's fire' kinda guy. I typically just wait for him to speak (tweet)....
I'd just be a bit surprised if he'd go somewhere where there's already an established face of the franchise. And the money aspect too. And there's not really an X-factor there like there is with Tampa or Toronto.
