This experience was invaluable. Seguin could've been a much better finisher, but there were several positives to take, the greatest of which is that benn proved that he is probably a top 20 maybe even top 15 player in this league. Kari was pretty awful the last two games, but he got the experience and next year campbell should be a sturdy backup. This offseason should be good for us too. Gotta extend some players like Roussel, get to lose some players like whitney, and we need to go out and get us one more center that's a scoring threat.

sucks to lose like that but making the playoffs and competing was a huge step forward for this team. I sure didn't expect them to make a the playoffs before the season started. Definitely gives them something to build on for next season.

Had flipped over to baseball, missed it

Out of position, and not sure he even knew it had been moved towards the front of the net.

What a day. Rangers blow a 5 run lead, and the Stars, well you know......

This team will only get better. I'm excited for the years to come. They should be bright!

Gonna be a long summer.... baseball is awesome and i love the rangers, but there is a passion, emotion, and brotherhood in hockey that is not apparent in any other sport. With the rangers, sometimes it looks like we put 9 strangers who have never met eachother on the field. With the stars, they fight for eachother, bleed for eachother, sacrifice their body for eachother, and celebrate with eachother. They had finally gotten what we had been waiting for, but we choked. No way around it. I'll see the Stars again this September.

Stars only have themselves to blame for losing. When I saw them come out in the 3rd period and almost immediately go into prevent/just-hold-on mode, I told my wife I had a feeling that the Ducks might come back. That sitting on the lead style never works and for the life of me I can't understand why teams do it. The Stars got very little pressure on Hiller, especially after the 10 minute mark, and it became wave after wave of Ducks attacking.

The goal which killed them was #3, when Kari gave Bonino all kinds of room to shoot over him on the near post. That was where the game was lost. Kari has to make that save. If he just hugs the post there, the game probably ends 4-2. But instead it gave the Ducks all kinds of life, they smelled blood, the Stars were totally back on their heels, and a lucky bounce to that no-talent hack Smith-Pelley sealed their fates. I didn't even watch overtime because I knew how it was going to end.

But, their future is bright. They have a lot of positives to build on in 2015.

- Benn and Seguin are gonna be a lethal combo for years to come
- Nichushkin showed flashes of greatness this year and will only get better
- Roussel, Garbutt, and Eakin form a fantastic checking line
- Daley and Goligoski transformed into legit top 4 defensemen
- Dillon, Nemeth, and Oleksiak are all going to be solid d-men

The main chunk of the core is in place now. Here is what I'd like to see them do this summer:
- let Whitney and Thomas walk into retirement
- re-sign Fiddler to a 2-year deal @$1.5M
- Eakin, Dillon, and Roussel are restricted free agents, re-sign them all @ $2-3M each
- try like crazy to unload Gonchar, Cole, and Horcoff (likely no takers though)
- sign a backup goalie capable of starting 15 games
- sign a true #2 center (Kesler or Grabovski would be nice) @ $5M
- promote Brett Ritchie
Wishful thinking:
- try to bring Niskanen back
- try to trade Chiasson, Oleksiak, a #1 pick, and whatever else it takes for Ovechkin (high salary and all)

2015 Stars
Benn-Seguin-Nichushkin
Chiasson-Kesler-Sceviour
Roussel-Eakin-Garbutt
Horcoff-Fiddler-Cole

Goligoski-Daley
Dillon-Benn
Gonchar-Nemeth

Lehtonen
Backup Goalie

*** Ritchie, Connauton, and slim chance of Peverley could be involved too

Can't say I'm a big fan of either of the wishful thinkings... but Kesler would be really really nice. If we could get rid of Gonchar somehow that would be great.

I think we'll sign all the restricted guys, but I'm really unsure about fiddler. I like him, but I think theres over a 50% chance he's gone. If I had it my way next year, instead of Gonchar, I'd have either oleksiak or Connauton. Ovechkin would be a great finisher for us, something we lacked in the playoffs, but that's all he does. He plays no defense. His +/- was like -34!!!! Not only that, but he scored over 50 percent of his goals on the power play and it was still that low. I mean when I say he is a liability, i mean it. I don't think there's much that we have to do. If we could sign someone like Kesler, that would be freakin awesome. I think Campbell will be our backup next year, which I'm fine with. Other then that let the UFA's walk. The only one I'll miss is fiddler.

The reason I say trade for Ovechkin is because his value is at an all-time low. And while his defense is definitely lacking, he's still a beast of a goal scorer. Even though he scores a high percentage of his goals on the PP, that's fine. The Stars desperately need someone who can score on the PP. and it's not like Ovechkin is a perennial -34 player. He had one really bad plus/minus year. Oates was a terrible coach who misused a lot of his players. There's a reason he got canned so quickly.

To get an elite player, you have to luck into drafting him or trade for him when his value is at its lowest. That's how Dallas got Seguin. Boston had soured on him and the Stars rolled the dice. They could poach Ovechkin in the same way. Put him on a 2nd line with Kesler and the Stars would have 2 ridiculously sick top lines.

As for Niskanen, he has turned into a really nice player in Pittsburgh. He had over 40 points this season and logged top pair minutes. He is much better than when he left Dallas. He's not the ideal #1 guy, but there aren't any of those available this summer (unless they trade for Letang and his crazy contract).

He costs like 8 million though. I have a tough time believing wash will trade him. He would be a hit on our cap, plus he'd undoubtedly cost us a top prospect + a top draft pick. He comes with a lot of experience and will sell a TON of jerseys. So I'm sure they're considering all of those. But like you said, that's wishful.

Kesler would be awesome. I don't think we could do both just cuz of money, but that would be incredible.
