I came across this blurb in an article on sfigants.com about the Sanchez signing:
"Right-handed reliever John Brebbia has already been moved to the 60-day IL to free up a spot for left-hander Jake McGee, whose two-year, $7 million deal became official on Wednesday. McGee’s contract, the first multiyear deal given to a pitcher under Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, includes a third-year club option for the 2023 season."
I had completely forgotten about Brebbia being a 60 day IL candidate.

The article also posited this move to make room for Sanchez:
"The Giants will have to clear a spot on the 40-man roster to add Sanchez, but they’ll be able to create a vacancy by shifting outfield prospect Alexander Canario, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, to the 60-day injured list."

Are they still on the hook for his contract, or is there some kind of out if they cut ties with him before ST starts?
I read that if they cut him completely they will be on the hook for only a pro-rated amount (somewhere in the area of 150k).

I found some more precise information from this article:
"If no other team acquires Gott, he’d be entitled to thirty days’ termination pay (roughly $112K) as a player cut within the first half of spring training. Unlike the vast majority of MLB contracts, most arbitration deals aren’t fully guaranteed until Opening Day."

I wouldn't be surprised if some other team arranges a trade or puts in a claim. He's been dfa'd before (by the Nats) so he'll have a chance to test the free agent waters if he wishes.

Am I misremembering, or didn't Gott get DFA'd to make room for Sanchez?

I read somewhere, twitter probably, that speculation was Gott would clear waivers and be back in the org. It is interesting how FZ has shifted from prioritizing velocity (Coonrod, Anderson) to control. I mean, they'll take velocity too, but they want guys who can throw strikes, thinking they can teach them to miss bats (aka throwing more change-ups).

Since Gott was dfa'd previously by the Nationals he can refuse the assignment. Its up to him whether he decides to stick around.

FZ and Co have shifted a bit on how they are picking up extra arms as well. They went mainly from the waiver wire to minor league and cheap one year pick ups. Seems like a logical progression toward spending on bigger name players next year. Although the Dodgers didn't really sign many big name players off the market, I wonder if that was mainly the ownership plan rather than FZ's philosophy. I guess we'll see this next offseason.

I missed this...

I thought Canario was 60’d and Gott was DFA’d for McGee and Sanchez...

Looks like Beede was added to the 60-day DL as a corresponding move for Humphreys

I think so. Never went to arb under Sabean.

Not true. How could anyone forget that turd A.J. Pierzynski ? (Not that Sabes *wanted* to go to arb, but ...)

Are they still on the hook for his contract, or is there some kind of out if they cut ties with him before ST starts?

First, he was DFA'd (Designated For Assignment) - that doesn't necessarily mean that he is gone. A DFA means that ANY team (actually, all teams) can put in a waiver claim.

The Giants would have 10 days to try and make a deal with ANY team. If those 10 days pass with no deal, then the "worst" team (based on previous season's final standings) that made a waiver claim gets him and picks up all responsibilities for his contract.

If no team made a waiver claim, then the Giants could either :
* outright him (remove him from the 40-man, and send him to the minors)
or
* release him.

A player can only be outrighted ONCE in his career without his permission. A player must agree to any future "outright" (by ANY team, not necessarily the same team) after the first. IF the player refuses he becomes a free agent BUT the team is off the hook for his contract (if a one-year contract). (Actually, it is probably something closer to "has less than X years of service time and does not have a currently valid multi-year contract".)

If the player accepts the outright, then the team must honor the contract. Exception : since Gott had a one-year contract, IF he was cut before the mid-way point of Spring Training the Giants only owe a portion (percentage) of the contract. Ditto if he is cut during the second half of spring training (but the termination pay is a higher percentage).

Final status in this case : The Giants outrighted Gott to Sacramento, Gott agreed, he is guaranteed his $700K salary *even if he stays in the minors all year* (unless he is cut before he end of ST, then he'd get a pro-rated percentage of $700k, as mentioned before).

And Gott decided to stick around.

And Humphreys is gone . . . again. They dfa'd him a 2nd time to make room for Jose Alvarez, who signed a one year deal with an option for 2022 (why he gets a guaranteed deal and Watson does not, I do not understand). Subsequently, the Padres have claimed Humphreys. Why did FZ bring him back, just to dfa him again? What's the saying, "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me"?
As for Alvarez, before anyone claims "incremental increase", compare him to the lefties the Giants already have (and lost in Watson):
Jose Alvarez (31) - 2020: 6.1 IP, 1.42 ERA, 1.579 WHIP, 6 Ks; career (2013-2020): 340.2 IP, 3.59 ERA, 1.336 WHIP, 303 Ks
Jarlin Garcia (28) - 2020: 18.1 IP, 0.49 ERA, 0.982 WHIP, 14 Ks; career (2017-2020): 188.1 IP, 3.92 ERA, 1.195 WHIP, 135 Ks
Jake McGee (34) - 2020: 20.1 IP, 2.66 ERA, 0.836 WHIP, 33 Ks; career (2010-2020): 475.2 IP, 3.59 ERA, 1.154 WHIP, 530 Ks
Wandy Peralta (29) - 2020: 27.1 IP, 3.29 ERA, 1.207 WHIP, 25 Ks; career (2016-2020): 184.1 IP, 4.69 ERA, 1.481 WHIP, 150 Ks
Sam Selman (30) - 2020: 19.1 IP, 3.72 ERA, 1.138 WHIP, 23 Ks; career (2019-2020): 29.2 IP, 3.94 ERA, 1.146 WHIP, 33 Ks
Tony Watson (35) - 2020: 18 IP, 2.50 ERA, 0.889 WHIP, 15 Ks; career (2011-2020): 591 IP, 2.80 ERA, 1.090 WHIP, 526 Ks

This doesn't even take into consideration Caleb Baragar and Connor Menez, who are both being stretched out to start in Sacramento. Menez should have stayed with the big league club last year as he was one of their best relievers but got inexplicably sent to ATC and left there for the last 2 months of 2020.
Even with McGee replacing Watson, the Giants have two clearly good lefties in McGee and Garcia. Peralta and Selman, in my opinion are better too. Alvarez is signed on the strength of 6 innings in 2020. I don't see a reason he was needed. No one else wanted him before spring training. Dumb signing.

Maybe this is a signing that Kapler pushed for, Alvarez pitched for Kapler in 2019. This move strikes me as something we'll never truly know the whole story and probably reflects more on the person versus the numbers, because as you say on paper this doesn't really make much sense.
