The Giants have 1 catcher listed on the 40-man roster. They have added a few catchers to the upper minors including Ricardo Genovés, Clint Coulter, Brett Cumberland, and Blake Sabol. Genovés is the best among the group, but they are light at that position.

Backup catcher tends to be one of those roles you can fill in spring training. That said, I thought Austin Wynns did nicely behind the plate and his bat got better as the season went on.

um, if it's automatic....

its not an option....

you hurt my brain here.
Never called it an option. It is an opt-out. I thought the contract was really unique. Again, I mis-read what was stated and assumed the player would be able to walk from the contract automatically at a certain PA threshold.

Ok, who's gonna tell LHG?

The Giants have claimed roughly 47 backup catcher types the last five years. I wouldn’t worry too much at the moment about who is going to back up Joey Bart.

And “opt-in” indicates an “option”, not an “automatic”.

but anyway…

Interesting series of transactions. Nice to see the Giants were able to flip Marte for another pitcher. As far as I can tell, Miller was not on the Phillies' 40 man roster, which opens a spot for Jackson.
Yes, Jackson looked good in 2021. I assume he won't be ready until May or June.

I like the contract. The Giants have the potential to gain quite a bit of upside with the team option.

I am not familiar with Miller, but he was a 4th rounder, so I will blindly attribute some potential to that.

A little more money than I thought he'd get but it is team friendly as it's back loaded.

A bit high, but he fills a position of need, is short and offers team upside with the team-option.

Side bit, it leads to Marte’s ouster.

Re Miller, he went to Stanford, so he is likely intelligent and hopefully coachable. And I like that he is 6'5" and 240 lbs.

Luke Jackson's best seasons came in 2019 and 2021 when his slider usage was above 50%. The Giants tend to simplify/optimize pitch mix with pitchers, so this feels like a logical plan to continue with Jackson.

His minor league numbers have been decent enough, and he is going into his age 25 season.

Young. Big. High draft pick. Good minor league numbers. Starter.

On the surface, it looks like a GREAT trade.

Since the article on Jackson uses the word "signed", presumably he has a clean bill of health from our FO, such as could be at this point in his rehab.

He's only made 12 starts since the resumption of minor league baseball (looks like he was injured part of 2021 and may have been converted to relief in 2022). I would guess he'll be part of the RiverCats' bullpen to start 2022 but the Giants are a bit shorthanded in starting pitching there so he may get a shot as a starter.

I am assuming he will start the year on the IL. I see him as Boyd or Brebbia.

I wouldn't assume that. Just the word BBRef uses for any new free agent signing. They often do a subsequent post when the signing is official. However, with Marte gone, there is a spot on the 40 man roster for him so no other transactions are needed.

Either way. He gives roster flexibility and more depth in our swing-man corps…

Typically they say Team A and Player B have agreed on a deal if it is still pending. When they say “signed”, that typically means it is official. They also said that the team made the announcement, which, I believe, makes it official.

A couple more interesting notes about Miller from MLBTR:

He’s been considered one of the better prospects in the Philly system since then, with Baseball America having him in the club’s top 30 in each of the past three years.
Baseball America highlights that his fastball can reach 98 mph, with a plus slider and changeup as well.
