The next few days will be telling. I'm a bit surprised that they pulled the trigger now. Sure, he had a bad night last night but he wasn't so bad up until then. The momentum was going away from him being let go. Why drop him now when he looked worse coming into spring training (and in spring training)?
Maybe they think he can get through because all the other teams are also in roster crunches right now and precisely BECAUSE he had a bad outing.

They were only going to keep him up until they needed the spot. Once Littell came off the COVID list, he gone.

I seriously doubt we'll regret this one. He had every chance in the world to perform.

Losing 2 years of “show time” didn’t help.

I think kicking him to curb is the right thing to do, but it is always a bit scary letting a #1 walk.

I don't have the stats at my fingertips, but don't the vast majority of #1s get kicked to the curb?

Absolutely. Though I doubt it is “vast majority”. Maybe 60/40? But that is probably pre-cuppo. Before clearing rookie status is likely much higher.

Looking at 2010 (randomly grabbed a ”completed” draft)…

- 50 1st round picks

- 3 did not sign (2 never made majors (Loux, Whitson) 1 made the majors after getting drafted again (Covey))

- 16 never made it to MLB (+2 if you want to add the 2 who did not sign and did not make it via another draft) (Skole, Simpson, Sale, Vitek, Deglan, Cox, Clarke, O’Conner, Culver, Kvasnicka, Lipka, Lindsey, Bolden, Vettleson, Blair, Tago)

- 3 made it to bigs but either never exceeded rookie limits or barely did so (Wimmers, Brown, Lee)

- 14 either got their cuppo with another team or JUST got a cuppo with the drafting team (Pomeranz, DeShields, Choice, McGuire, Grandal, Foltynewicz, Biddle, Syndergaard, Ranaudo, Wojciechowski, Jackson, Ruffin, Olt, Jenkins)

So 36/50 either never made a mark or made their initial mark with another org. Only 14 made at least a passing mark with the drafting team to start their MLB career.

Interesting to see Hjelle up. His numbers haven't been that good in AAA

His numbers were really good until his last start in Albuquerque.

In April, he had a 1.96 ERA in 18.1 innings (4 starts), with only 3 walks and 10 K's and a WHIP of 1.04

In Albuquerque, he gave up 8 runs (7 earned) in 4.1 innings, more than doubling his season ERA.

See, that is the difference between you and me. I didn't bother to look at game by game comparison. I wonder if the Giants will stick with an opener at least once every five days or if they'll put Hjelle in the rotation.

The Gs currently have 41 players on the 40. I figure there are 3 possibilities…

Llovera DFA
Ford DFA
Longo to the 60

The wording on Llovera's demotion could be possible that he was taken off the 40 man roster. It was similar to what happened with Tom.

Both Roster Resources and the Giants MLB page have it listed as “optioned”.

Laziness.

Pure laziness.

Kids today just don’t have the work ethic.

I ALREADY TOLD YOU!! GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

The team page has 41 players listed on the 40 man roster (not counting 60 day IL players). I would guess that Tom is NOT on the 40 man roster and no one that handles that website have bothered to update it.

Was reading that Junis will start today. Two questions:

1. Why not Rodon?
2. Who gets sent down, Santos?

Santos, Brebbia, Rogers and Doval are the only pitchers with options.

I would not be completely disappointed to see Doval given a break. Dude is WAY too inconsistent at this point to be trusted in anything more high pressure than BP.
