I think Eloco summed it up pretty well in post #18.

:whoo: :whoo: :whoo:

I haven't totally dropped the Bruins, though (if that makes me less of a fan, so be it).

You're less of a fan... but mostly, you're less of a man!! ;)

I found IPW's list interesting per my baseball (non-/tri-curious)fandom.

You grew up in a city that didn't field a team for a specific sport-- so you picked a random team -- and then either a.) your city landed a team, or b.) you moved to a city that fielded a team for that specific sport.

I grew up about an hour from DC and Baltimore, but was always a DC fan except for baseball where the Orioles played. My dad and his dad were Senators fans that took me to O's games since the Senators had long since moved away.

•The owner of your favorite team treated his fans so egregiously over the years that you couldn't take it anymore -- you would rather not follow them at all then support a franchise with this owner in charge.

In my 20s I grew tired of Angelos and disillusioned with the Orioles.

•You grew up in a city that didn't field a team for a specific sport-- so you picked a random team -- and then either a.) your city landed a team, or b.) you moved to a city that fielded a team for that specific sport.

I moved to Cleveland in my 30s and since I was tired of the Orioles and desperate to add another perennially terrible team to my roster of losers, I became an Indians' fan. I think I partly enjoyed being a sports fan in Cleveland because as a DC area resident, there is no solidarity in the local teams since many people here aren't actually from here.

When I returned to DC, the Nationals had moved in while I was off in Ohio. And I really started enjoying going to baseball games because I had never lived so close to a baseball stadium before. It's one thing to live near an arena or a football stadium. But living by a baseball field is something pretty cool b/c there are games for nearly 1/4th of the year. So you get into it more and now I'd say I care about and follow the Nats and don't care much about the Os' (sorry Comeds) and Indians (sorry Cleveland). I'm a recovering baseball fan, though the lack of parity in the sport still turns me off.

As I think I've stated before, when I first began following the NHL in '09-'10 I was a Thrashers fan, so I still have something of a 'soft spot' for the Jets. - But now that they're in the same division as the Wild, it's getting a bit harder for me to wish them well.

But overall, while I enjoy a good rivalry, I don't have any teams that I just flat out hate: I've never been that sort of fan when it comes to any sport.

Me, too. Too many nice Canadians who aren't willing to judge others.

This American is happy to!! ;)

I just see it a bit differently. When I was a kid my local market didn't have a team. I became a hockey & Isles fan during the 1980 Olympics & shortly after became an Isles fan due to Mike Bossy. When Orange County got a team I decided to follow them as well. I don't see it as a big deal. When the Isles play the Ducks I will always cheer for the Isles no matter what. Considering the state of the Isles franchise the past 20 years I think that says alot.

For instance, one of my Connecticut buddies rooted for the Sixers during the Doctor J Era, then happened to be living in Orlando when the Magic came to town. Now he's a Magic fan. That's acceptable.

This is the one that applies in my case, there was no NHL team in Calgary, and I didn't want to cheer for either the Habs or Leafs. I liked Bobby Orr and thus the Bruins became my team. When the Flames relocated to Calgary from Atlanta, I became a Flames fan. I haven't totally dropped the Bruins, though (if that makes me less of a fan, so be it).

You're aight in my book dash :suds:

When I first started watching hockey, there were two Canadian teams -- Toronto and Montreal. Since I used to spend quite a bit of time visiting my dad who lived in Toronto, I chose Toronto. The next year, Vancouver came into the league. Funny, had Vancouver had a team when I had to chose, I *may* have taken them.

I'm a fan of 1 and only 1 team.

I watch other games, because being Canadian ,hockey is in our blood.
The other 29 teams can go take a Philadelphia flying fuck.

I say whatever works for you.

I actually have a couple of old buddies that cheer for both the Habs and Leafs. Another friend of mine changes teams constantly. I once went to a Canucks/Kings game in Vancouver with that dude; he started the game cheering for Vancouver and by the 3rd period, he was cheering for the Kings (Kings won, 5-1).

Like I say, whatever works for ya.

Being that inconsistent is NOT okay!

If the team you're rooting against is playing well, saying so is fine, but changing sides mid-game? Bleep that!

Exactly! Whatever works for you is all that matters. I don't think anyone should have to explain themselves to anyone else. For that matter, I'm not really sure why anyone else would care.

The only exception is someone that switches teams then rubs it in your face if/when they win. That's obviously annoying. Living in a geographically neutral area, I see this from time to time. I remember in high school in the early-mid 90s, people that use to be Oilers, Bruins, fans or fans of whatever other team suddenly became Leafs' fans when they started getting good and went to the conference finals in back to back years. A few years later, a different crop emerged as Wings' fans. In both cases, they would get all cocky when they'd win. :L

I come from a dysfunctional family.
My dad was a Habs fan.
His 3 sons in order,Bruins,Flyers(me) and Leafs. The Habs loyalty skipped a generation as that is what my son is.He will however deck out in Flyer's gear when we go to Detroit or Toronto to see them.
