Haven't been so great? One, he was the second best RS in the league before he got injured - How is that not great? What adjective would you use to define that level of performance?

What about his receiving ability makes you believe he is close to being a#1 receiver?

Ginn has played as one of the best return man in the league this year. He's gone to the house, certainly gave us great field position at times and best of all, he hasn't(IIRC) drop/muff a ball or cause a crucial TO like many other before him.

I for one, am not taking for granted what Ginn does for us in the return game.

It's incredibly unfair to compare what Ginn does to our previous returners. It's like declaring Alex Smith to be a great QB based on what we've put out there since Garcia left. Sure he's better than Rattay, Dorsey, Pickett. . . but that doesn't make him a great QB.

Ginn can be replaced. If we have to choose between an upgrade at WR and a downgrade at RS or Ginn I'm making the switch.

I wouldn't. I'd keep the great returner despite his lacking at WR. I'd rather go with an unknown at WR and have Ginn only do returning and special offensive packages. It's not like Ginn should be a #1 or a #2.

A great return man is more important than a good #3 or #4 WR IMO.

How about dumping both Crabtree & Ginn for Williams? Free up some cap space maybe pick up an extra DP in 2012 or '13...

I wholeheartedly agree, btw...

I wouldn't dump Crabby. Ideally he's the #2 WR IMO. The Niners need a #1 WR so Crabby can be the #2; Williams can be the #3 and Ginn can be the #4.

You're both wrong.

And Ginn is not a good #3 or #4 WR. He's a bad WR. He's maybe a #6 WR.

And we can't go to 4 wide sets because our WR4 sucks.

Ginn doesn't suck so bad that he can't be a 4th option. in a 4 WR set he'd mostly be a decoy.

Yes he does. He can't be a decoy. We've tried him as a decoy and defenses ignore him because he sucks.

He is a horrible WR.

And as I said a few weeks ago in a thread about Ginn, I don't know how much of the return game is Ginn and how much is the blocking in front of him. He averaged 1.6 more yards per KR than Hunter and Williams (27.6 vs 26.0).

It's a small sample size for the others, but it's something.

Ginn finished 3rd in the league in average yards per KR, but the 7th place guy had 27.0. It's very tight and with such low numbers of returns, one return can significantly impact your average.

Ginn is a horrible STARTING WR. He's not horrible compared to the #4 WRs around the league.

I don't think anyone would try to claim Ginn isn't a great return man.

Just a few weeks ago imac said that he wouldn't want ginn signed next year even for the minimum.

He also posted the following about Ginn:

The 49ers can get a player that will average the second most yards per kickoff return and the 4th most average yards per punt return for the league minimum and that the Niners can upgrade that quite easily

He's not an explosive return guy

He doesn't have a lot of wiggle

He seems to go down very easily when someone makes him change direction

He doesn't even have to be touched.

If someone makes him cut, he either comes to a complete stop, or falls.

All of which are true.

He's a sprinter. The end.

No they can't. Who's gonna do that?

What the crap??? He most certainly is.

I won't go into the "wiggle" or his ability to break tackles, but he's EASILY an explosive return man. This is ludicrous.

If we dump Crabtree, we would be going with Williams. He'd be the only WR on our roster at that point.

There is absolutely no reason to get rid of Crabtree. At worst right now, he's a good secondary receiver. At best, he's a decent if unspectacular go-to guy. At some point his contract may become prohibitively expensive, but until we need the money, it'd be stupid to drop the guy who is our clear-cut best receiver.

Imac, you are losing your mind...Don't get so emotional - a #6 WR? what the fuck is that? Ginn is much better as both a WR and a RS than you think.
