Where did I say I was writing off Mathis? We don't know anything about him as a pro really. He could be a bust or he could be the next Warren Sapp...we don't know. I disagreed with the strategy and still do.

If Payne re-signs, then the pick was made for backup purposes. That doesn't make much sense to me for several reasons. First of all, we needed starters at other positions or we needed to reinforce positions of weakness in general such as OLine and LB. Using a 2nd round pick for depth only is a luxury we do not have at this point. If we are the Chiefs or Eagles...sure. But we have a poor roster and need as much talent as possible with many units.

Secondly, I believe it sent the wrong message to Payne. To me, it signaled that we are fine with him walking as his backup was a high round pick ready to be plugged in. To me, that doesn't show much confidence in Payne as a player or that Rivera is anticipating the negotiations not amounting to much. If this is the case then we need to go DE in the 1st or 2nd because Young and Sweat are now in the same position Payne was last year right? Would you support burning a 2nd round pick on a DE?

For depth, I don't think the pick should have been considered if IMan would have been retained. Rivera cut the DLine depth and then went after the OLine. I am very happy with the Ridgeway pick up, but puzzled why IMan was cut when we had plenty of cap room and he had an above-average 2021 season. He is a quality back up. Basically, Rivera needlessly created a hole and had to fill it. He chose to do so with a high round pick when other units on the field were in much worse shape. You complained non-stop about the OLine but have yet to admit that the 2nd round pick should have gone to the OLine. Why are you not going after Rivera for not addressing the OLine with that pick?

I mention Wentz and Turner because you are pulling the same stunt here. Many have told you that you put on blinders and refuse to see the bigger picture. This is why many posters don't engage you and others ignore your posts.

Umm...drafting is a GM duty Dean? You aren't making any sense. If his GM duties have been a weak point but his drafting has been strong...doesn't that cancel each other out? I disagree 100% with your comment about Rivera's drafts but whatever.

thats nonsense his draft has been fine. Gm meaning his FA pickups is what i meant. No blinders on here, i can see why things were done if it doenst work out then oh well no one can predict the future. no arguments oline should have been addressed and the 2nd round pick could of went there., IMO Payne is leaving, and it will create a hole, that was the reason for the pick. RR is forecasting Payne it leave. He doenst want to pay him.

Add to it ridgeway was a 5th round pick and he showed more then Mathis

cmon man Mathis got hurt week 1, how was he supposed to prove himself. If Payne leaves and Mathis does well is a good pick?

you have no proof that he would have been there, plus we would have lost out on Brian Robinson. Do you think Payne is going to get a long-term deal? Who's Clowney? CY?

If Payne doesn't get a long term deal then firing the Head coach/GM and all of his minions shouldn't be required... they must all quit.

In your opinion do you think he gets a long-term deal from us?

Especially since they pretty much told Payne they have a replacement in the wings. It was a poor strategy that Dean refuses to see or admit to.

We literally have the worst LB corps in the NFL and a bottom 5 OLine but by all means, lets draft DLine again and send the message to Payne that he is absolutely replaceable....SMH.

Dean stated that he sees why they did it. That is fine but that does NOT mean it was the right thing to do. I understand why Bernie Madoff did what he did...he wanted to get mega rich in secret. That doesn't mean it was the right thing to do at all.

Let me be clear, I am NOT comparing Rivera to Madoff at all. Rivera is a good person and a great ambassador for the game. What I am saying is that Dean saying "I understand why they did it" doesn't mean it was the smart thing to do.

It is ok to make mistakes...just don't make the ones that are easy to avoid.

Agreed, bad business is one of those things that go with culture change!

I have projections and we have the replacement in ridgeway , as for BROB you have no proof we would have lost him

at that time there was no ridgeway. Obviously, they had mathis rated higher than Brob. So, when the third 3round pick came along they would have taken mathis over brob if an olineman was drafted in the 2nd round. that's the proof.

  • Washington Commanders
    DARON PAYNEDL, WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
    Payne

Washington coach Ron Rivera said the team has opened contract talks with DT Daron Payne.

The Commanders didn't extend Payne last offseason, letting Payne play out his fifth-year option while drafting DL Phildarian Mathis in the second round. That backfired for Washington, with Payne posting career highs in sacks (11.5) and TFLs (18). Extending Payne is expected to cost $20 million per year, and with DT Jonathan Allen set to count $21 million against the cap, Washington will be paying over $40 million for its two starting tackles if they re-sign Payne. Franchising Payne would cost the Commanders $18 million.

If Payne gets extended, then then I agree with you guys that the Mathis pick was really bad. My reasoning at the time of the draft when Mathis was selected was, they knew they wouldn't be able to resign him, and they were drafting his replacement. Maye the fight between him and Allen two years ago had them worried that he won't resign here. Thats alot of money tied up in Dt's. We will see what happens. Payne might get more than 20M per season,

At the time I drafted ridgeway over and over again in round 5 where he was picked . Almost all the mocks I did had him going later ( brob )
