Elliotte Friedman last night on Tim & Sid: "I do believe, no matter what happens, is that this will be William Nylander's final season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whether he signs, or whether he doesn't sign, this is gonna be it. And even if he does sign, I think Toronto trades him by the draft at the latest"

Remember when Dreger said if the Leafs had signed Jimmy Vesey they would've 100% traded Nylander?

Not having an in on the Leafs anymore drives these people fucking nuts.

Best path forward is to sign him to a contract that is tradeable. No need to trade him before Dec 1, they have tons of cap space to fit him in this year. Load up for this year, see how the playoffs go, then trade him at the draft next June.

Hey I'm fine with him coming back, scoring a point per game+, winning the Cup and then being traded for a 1D.

I just don't know if that's what he, the Leafs or anybody else is expecting to happen, or wants to happen, or if he's planning on changing careers to chess after this season etc. It's just a very trolly comment from Friedman that he knows will rile up the biggest fanbase in the league when he knows very well he and every other media person who's pretended to know anything about this situation has been completely frozen out by both club and player.

How many Senators stories broke in 2018 that absolutely none of these guys had prior to them coming out despite the Sens being run like Dunder Mifflin Paper Co.?

Once in a while they can pinpoint where smoke is coming from but most of these guys' work these days is speaking after the fact about "Oh, Team X was heavy in the running for Player X but after he was traded to Team Y they decided to refocus elsewhere".

It's so ridiculous.

Say Willy signs a bridge deal just to get playing. Somehow this, or something else, fucks up the team's chemistry and they limp into the playoffs only to go out in 5 meek games in the first round. Dubas is shown the door because he made a couple of bad moves at the deadline (or did nothing).

You're telling me that a new GM won't try to mend fences.

Or Nylander comes back, has a blast and they compete deep into the playoffs with him scoring >1PPG. Dubas isn't going to think twice about prioritizing Nylander.

Or somewhere in between but along the way Nylander and Matthews develop great chemistry and Matthews goes on record saying that he loves playing with Nylander. Dubas is going to ship Willy out during negotiations with Matthews?

Gimme a fucking break. These guys know nothing and anything can happen after a player is signed and until the papers are dry on a trade.

This is what bothers me - I expect shit like that from the Howard Berger set. Steve Simmons has had a missive about how Willie was a high-maintenance dressing room distraction saved on MS Works on his Compaq Presario for months just waiting for the moment to strike.

I used to place Friedge above this crap, and with good reason, but he's been on a slow slide to the trollish side. Bob McKenzie really seems to be the only one with the restraint to answer "I don't deal in hypotheticals or predictions" anymore and he'll be retired in a year.
