Well, that's actually a good point - The new soccer stadium in Southampton (St. Mary's) has certainly perked up that part of town.
Yeah except St. Mary's cost 32 million quid to build, including infrastructure improvements. I don't know if it was public money or not, but either way it pales in comparison to the half a billion+ they'll need in Seattle.

nothing else is "happening" in Tukwila though ... might take a generation to revive that area even with a new arena

have Glendale and Sunrise and even Kanata taught anyone anything???

Yup - The other thing is will Seattle hockey fans be willing to fork out NHL ticket prices to watch hockey. A $20 - $30 hit for junior hockey is one thing, when you're asking 5 to 10 times that amount, it's a much tougher sell.

thats always been a worry of mine ... and the fashionable fan nature of seattle sports will probably give them a couple of years of good gates but theyre gonna have to win to maintain that

putting that arena anywhere other than next to the 2 other stadia is a mistake imo ... people like to go down there ... you put the arena somewhere distant and that NHL franchise becomes the red headed stepchild (if it wont be already to begin with)

They would be wiser to give Portland an NHL team if Paul Allen could be brought on board. Moda is already outfitted for hockey and their is a strong following of the Winterhawks.

I was asking for your opinion on the South King County area (ie Tukwila/SeaTac)

SoDo is what it is ... where all the other stadiums are

Oops. Tukwila is a decent enough area, not as nice as a city like Bellevue, but still alright. It's not particularly large though, and I'm not sure how well it would handle the traffic influx on game nights. Especially if Seattle does end up getting both an NBA and NHL team at some point. The light rail does go through Tukwila down to SeaTac, so that would help, but I'd still be wary. The Thunderbirds have thrived since moving to Kent, but then again their new building only holds 6,000, about a third of what you'd expect for a professional franchise. I think the team would be much better off with the current arena plan in SoDo.

YIKES!

""If we're going to do hockey, there would have to be a substantial lowering, if not elimination, of the public investment," Burgess said."

Well, that pretty much puts it on the backburner. It's gotta be a package deal (both NBA and NHL) in order for the city of Seattle to step up.

Then Seattle will have to live with no NBA nor NHL team for the rest of time

Don't see much success for the NHL in Seattle. Like the Seahawks, the Seattle team won't be all that popular until they start winning. They completely ignored the Supersonics cause they never won, but when the Thunder get good, suddenly Seattle wants their team back. Just not a good sports town, but especially not hockey.

Today is the deadline for NHL expansion bid submission and I don't believe anyone from Seattle has submitted a bid as of yet...

this was from friday ... so it wasnt a total surprise that no one from seattle put in a bid

Sources: No NHL Seattle expansion bid coming Monday

the way it reads ... Victor Coleman seems to think "deadline shmedline"

A source involved from the Seattle effort said Friday the Coleman group had told the NHL it wanted to finalize the arena site before submitting an application. The same source also indicated Vancouver, B.C., native Coleman hoped to "fast track" the expansion process once a land deal is completed.

Update on NHL expansion application process - NHL.com - News

This kinda reads like "Hey, we forced you to make a serious, potentially region-changing decision regarding billions of dollars in 2 weeks and you guys were too pussy to jump in. Pussies! <3, Bettman."

Honestly though, the entire city of Seattle has been tripping over theirselves with the whole arena situation and it reeks of a city that's not serious enough when it comes to getting a team - if they really wanted to get into this business they would have made a better effort to sort out the arena situation - the whole stance of wanting an NBA team first hurt them too because that makes them seem as if they don't really want the NHL as much as they do an NBA team

Seattle has had numerous years to step up to the plate and they still can't figure out an arena deal - it's too bad because they are probably the most logical city to get an NHL team when you consider evening up the conferences at 16 and how the close proximity to Vancouver helps and the fact that they have a good following with the T-Birds
