I don't blame Seattle for taking their time - why rush these decisions and wind up with an arena in an awful place that is doomed from the get-go? Do you expect people to not learn from Glendale? And of course they want an NBA team over the NHL. Not only did they lose theirs, but an American city that prefers NHL over NBA is pretty hard to find to begin with. Maybe Minneapolis?Honestly though, the entire city of Seattle has been tripping over theirselves with the whole arena situation and it reeks of a city that's not serious enough when it comes to getting a team - if they really wanted to get into this business they would have made a better effort to sort out the arena situation - the whole stance of wanting an NBA team first hurt them too because that makes them seem as if they don't really want the NHL as much as they do an NBA team
Seattle has had numerous years to step up to the plate and they still can't figure out an arena deal - it's too bad because they are probably the most logical city to get an NHL team when you consider evening up the conferences at 16 and how the close proximity to Vancouver helps and the fact that they have a good following with the T-Birds
I think the league is mad because it appears the Seattle people may just be waiting for the Coyotes to finally be done with Glendale and they can then buy them for dirt cheap and pay a far smaller relocation fee than Bettman seems to be dreaming about for the expansion fee.
Quebec was probably in the same boat but the Florida ownership group seems intent on losing as much money as possible before seeking relocation and the Islanders decided to start being relevant again so Quebecor were left with a giant arena with no tenant therefore forcing their hand.
Anyway, this was all handled very poorly by the NHL and Bettman. He should've given teams months to get their ducks in a row and judge whether or not it was viable to bid for an NHL team. He shouldn't have come out and said he wants half a billion for an expansion team. He sure as shit shouldn't have come out and chastised potential owners. He shouldn't have done this when the future of one of his teams is in very serious doubt in its current location, making bidding on an expansion team seem foolish when there's a team that has already done all the hard work of building a franchise structure (farm teams, scouting, middle management etc.) that could be available for relocation in a matter of months, etc.
