fans as well (from the comments section):

There is nothing wrong with gutting the team, as long as you have a plan. The Oilers only plan seemed to be finish last and pick the first pick. It,s only now that the team is looking like a competitive team. And if Hopkins gets hurt for any extended time the team will have another year when the draft pick is the only thing worth remembering about the season. Lots of teams change their rosters even dramatically. Look at the Philly team in 2009-2010, it's how you do it that's important.

Really? Competing to escape the lottery maybe.

I don't see any downside...

From the comments section:

Out of the box for sure. Let’s go visit one of the worst head coaches in the nfl, who is on the hot seat like no other, on one of the most notoriously dysfunctional franchises in the league. Oh wait, that sounds exactly like oilers. I’m actually starting to feel sorry for oil fans.

So I guess Mark Spector wrote an article about the hiring of Tyler Dellow by the Oilers and he was very snarky. The article has since been removed, but here are some of the juicy tidbits:

No one criticized certain moves by Oilers management more sharply (or sarcastically) than Dellow. On Tuesday, after rumoured consultation with Dellow for months, head coach Dallas Eakins and GM Craig MacTavish have invited him into their inner circle.

From Mom’s basement to Hockey Op’s. That’s quite a leap, and it couldn’t have happened to a more notorious guy.

Dellow was The Voice of analytics online and has spawned protégés. There are others who do what Dellow did when it comes to championing analytics, but nobody did it like he did, slathered in smarm and condescension, with an antagonistic side dish of provocation.

Just as Dellow became the Pied Piper of hockey stats geeks, so too did his aggressive behaviour become a stereotype that has hindered popular acceptance of that community. Mc79hockey believed that any dissenting views should be targeted for ridicule, and if Dellow acts the same way in his new job, he won’t last. Period.

I’ve had a few twitter conversations with the man, but Dellow found a way to make most of them personal. That is why when mainstream hockey writers like myself repeat that we don’t dislike analytics, just many of the people who ply the trade, we’re speaking of Dellow.
He knew everything about the game from his spot outside the circle. Now he is inside, with a chance to prove how smart he’s always said he is.

Godspeed, Tyler. This is where preparation and opportunity meet.

So when do we find out that he was a victim of being hacked?

lol - I think the Oilers brass got wind of this piece and exercised their collective muscle to have it pulled from the Sportsnet site.

/Not the first time they have gone down that road, by the way.

I don't understand why Eakins did this. All I can say is misery loves company. Eakins probably took one look at the Cowboys defense & felt better about his team.

Bob Waterman @esbbob
Since Oilers traded Wayne Gretzky 26 years ago today they have the 2nd-worst record of any of the 21 NHL teams at the time (NYI).

there's more

Wayne Gretzky scored 1669 points for the Oilers. Since the trade, no Oiler has come within 1000 of that total (Ryan Smyth, 631).
