These proposals just aren't realistic. I mean, why would the Oilers give up assets for a poor man's Justin Schultz? Please explain that to me 2012 Oilers fans.

You know who the Oilers could use on defense? A guy like Jeff Petry.

They could also probably use Martin Marincin. By the end of the season that deal was looking like more and more of a steal by the day.

Stolen from another board, but it certainly sheds light on the main issue with the Oilers:

They have had a top-10 pick in each of the last 7 drafts (soon to be 8), which has been a top-3 pick in 5 of those 7. Those high draft picks should have translated into some high-quality picks in the second round and beyond as well...

In all of their picks outside of the first round since 2009, Anton Lander (40th overall in 2009) and Brandon Davidson (162nd overall in 2010) are the only things resembling full-time NHLers still in the Oilers' system.

Lander put up a whopping 3 points in 61 games for the Oilers this season, and Davidson played 51 games for them this season.

There are also some Oilers picks from the second round and beyond playing elsewhere in the NHL...

Last year, at the Draft, the Oilers traded 2010 46th overall pick, Martin Marincin to Toronto for Brad Ross and a 4th Round pick. Marincin played 65 games for the Leafs this season. Ross played in Germany.

At the trade deadline in 2013, the Oilers and Coyotes swapped former 2011 4th round picks, Tobias Rieder and Kale Kessy. This season, Rieder put up 37 points in 82 games in his second season in the NHL. Kessy had 12 points in 56 games for Bakersfield.

Here's my favourite: In 2012, the Oilers drafted Erik Gustafsson in the 4th round, 93rd overall. In 2014, the Oilers didn't sign him to a contract and lost his rights. Last April, Gustafsson signed an ELC with the Blackhawks and came to North America this season. He played 41 games for Chicago this season. Despite only playing half the season, he ended up tied for 4th on the Blackhawks for points by a D-man, and third for points-per-game.

Marincin, Rieder, and Gustafsson played a combined 188 NHL games and scored a combined 58 NHL points this season.

This season, in addition to Lander and Davidson, the Oilers got games from Anton Slepyshev (88th in 2011) and Jujhar Khaira (63rd in 2012). The four players combined to play 138 NHL games and scored a combined 17 NHL points.

I did an analysis like this 3 years ago at the old fort. It's amazing that as bleak as it was then, it has actually gotten worse.

Marincin has a good shot of making a home on the Leafs' bottom 4 for a long time. If you ask some fans, they think he was the best partner Rielly has had since he started his career although personally I think if they're going to pair left shots Jake Gardiner makes more sense paired with him on a second pair while they need to find another 1D to play with Rielly (any of Barrie, Vatanen, Dumba or Trouba will do).

The difference here is in a few years the Leafs gave themselves the chance to have conversations like that while Edmonton is still trying to get the tires out of the blue line mud despite a decade of failure. That's putrid.

Yeah, an undersized power play specialist d man - exactly what they need.

What would Edmonton do with Strome though anyway? Last thing they need to be trading for is more centremen.
