Maryland is one of the states that gets more from the federal government than it pays, so they will be extremely limited in what they can do. Even if they had resources, they'd be able to help individual workers but what is a state going to be able to do to help fix or replicate functions of Social Security, NOAA or NIH? They just won't.

I know tons of people out there who left private enterprise to go to "more stable" federal jobs. A group of guys I know went to Hopkins. All these people tried to get me to come with them, but I wanted out of Maryland. Glad I did. So far, only two have lost their jobs, but reading their posts about the uncertainty and panic is gut-wrenching. My cousin and her husband moved from NC back to MD for his career. They both are contractors in smaller fed agencies relating to cybersecurity. Literally any time either of their phones ring, it could be it for them.

Living with that kind of fear is not healthy.

I hope Trudeau’s statement where he ends it with “these tariffs are in direct contravention of the agreement President Trump signed” gets fair airtime on US channels. It’s a biting line - he’s saying his own deals suck and you want to believe he knows what he’s doing here?

But that said I really don’t think it’s worth trying to “punish” the US by cutting off energy or anything else. 1, hurts us more overall and 2, might give him the reasoning to launch some kind of invasion.

Would much rather the focus still be on strengthening our own lot within our own borders. Hope that his own tariffs do enough economic damage in important places that it forces them to the table.

I had some restricted stock grants that were distributed to me yesterday. Naturally they are already worth less than when I got them yesterday.
Granted, I did not purchase these as they were awarded but nothing makes you warm and fuzzy they keep losing value.

Mrs 43 and I are staring to take a hard look at where we stand as I'm about ten years out and she's 12 or so. Our planner showed us a situation where 2 people with roughly the same assets retired 4 years apart (2004 vs 2008) and the 2004 guy has accumulated money and the 2008 person is essentially broke just because they happened to retire just before the housing bubble collapse.

The planner also said about a third of people are suddenly asking how to retire abroad. When we asked.

I recently had a chat with my financial guy and we tweaked some things due to the orange menace and his tariff threats. I haven't completely abandoned the market, but certainly my exposure is a lot less. Just checked it and while it's dropped somewhat, it's a lot less of a drop if I hadn't made that change.
