Anybody who believes other country's Healthcare systems are so much worse are really ignorant and/or really lucky.

I've had two people in my family who needed to see a dermatologist for something their PCP said was probably cancer, and had to wait 6 - 8 months for an appointment.

Eye specialists are are few in my area, it takes a long time for most of their appointments. The eye doctor who lasered my eyes (and who while looking in my eyes said "my holes stay open" giving me difficulties) said she can/will have to work forever because according to her no one is going in that field. She blamed Hillary for something she did to the residency program in the 90s.

So we have super long waits and issues at times, and we have to pay for it. Eye stuff is "fun" too. It has to be argued whether it's vision related and will be covered by eyecare insurance (with usually larger out of pocket costs), or health related and covered by medical insurance.

How we accept everything including the fact that we need separate insurances for eyes and teeth is beyond me.

And all of this is just the frustration of getting access to care, and says nothing about fighting your own insurance after you get it.

When my mom was fighting Cancer, she got a promotion to a better paying office job where she already worked. Her insurance company argued that it was a change in employment, therefore a change in insurance and as such a pre-existing condition. She had been working at the place for 10 years.

My son had a testicular torsion (it's as bad as it sounds) and had a quick surgery to turn the little bugger back around and tack it down so it didn't turn around again. First insurance misread the code as an -ectomy and said they wouldn't cover it because it was unnecessary. The hospital informed them what the word actually meant and they tried to say it was not covered because it was "cosmetic surgery". Doctor went ballistic. Said my son would have lost one if they didn't do surgery that day.

And for me, on my third knee surgery, they sent me a questionnaire in a plain envelope with no return address that likely got tossed as junk mail that asked if it was due to an accident that they could sue someone else for and since I didn't respond they refused to cover it. I tore them up, and my Ortho doc got on the phone with them and said it was years of sporting and overuse damage and in no way tied to one single incident and they are lucky he didn't suggest a full replacement. He's been working on this knee for 15 years.


I had a span of 8 years where we hit our out of pocket maximum every year. Kid playing hockey, another kid with a number of sinus issues, wife's heart problem and my knees and broken ribs. We are just now getting back to even with that debt. It's the better part of the price of a lake house. Or 2 years earlier retirement.
