The only thing I really want to be true (because the alternate theories are terrifying):

Thought of this guy too

That a foreign government can explode your devices remotely somehow.

that's what I assumed you meant mainly. I just thought you had heard of more theories

it is a sobering thought and I could see happening with new technology but pagers are so old school that it mind numbing to think that would be possible

Can only imagine the huge rabbit hole that discussion is.
General consensus is that it isn't possible on mass market mobile phones or tablet without modification. Pretty much all the internal components of Apple, Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, and even some of the more popular Chinese brands like Huyawei and ZTE are pretty well documented and nothing in them could be exploited for anything more than shutting a device off. Maybe raise the heat which *might* cause a battery fire, but it's more likely the board would fry and the phone would die before the battery get hot enough. Battery fires are usually slow and not explosive unless in an airplane next to a bottle of gasoline....

The power that these things went off with combined with the fact that they were all at once heavily points to them being rigged.

And, these devices were pagers, so there are fewer components inside them to begin with so less likely you could cause any standard components to explode. It also means more space to hide a few grams of explosive.

Estimates are 5000 of them went off, 2750 people injured, 8 killed.

Notably there are reports of pager explosions in Damascus, Syria and the Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon was also injured.

Wonder if we're gonna see any of these in the US...
