I had a feeling that the Niners wouldn't be on the hook for much. However, the source for this feeling was Madden Footbal video games, so I wasn't sure how accurate my feeling was. LOL. In Madden, the team that trades away a player always remains on the hook for the signing bonus money.

I think Madden wanted to make his franchise mode as realistic as possible. So while it isn't always there, it is usually close.

I dont get this one. 49ers have RBs.

It's always good to add more playmakers, especially when they only have to pay McCaffrey $690K for the remainder of this season.

IMO it takes some of the baggage off of Deebo, always said he wanted to be receiver. Now there is a breather, like someone said, because of CMC injury history, all of sudden he gets a lighter load, and Panthers pick up a good chunk of the tab.

Panthers get a bunch of picks and have to carry some dead weight. CMC was perhaps their only weapon and they ran him into the ground.

Sounds like a good deal all around.

Oh no doubt. Its just burying someone deeper on the bench.

They had to do it to beat out the Rams' offer, I guess. Also, they have some compensatory picks from losing 3 coaches to other teams, so I guess they felt that they could afford to trade as many picks as they did.

General attrition and parity of the league has to be a factor, too. Its way too easy to drop games because of injured players and just having another horse is reason enough to make the move, tbh

It's a good move by the Niners. Lot's of options on offense going to be tough on opposing defenses.

I will admit. The 9ers offense will look scary for the 2 games CMC plays with them this year.

Just trying to help members understand the dynamics of the trade:

The Panther will NOT be paying McCaffrey $18,352,250 next season. That figure is money the Panthers have previously paid to McCaffrey that they hadn't yet accounted for in the salary cap. The Panthers were always going to have to account for it so it's not a new or avoidable cap debt. That figure was going to be accounted for over the next few seasons. For cap accountancy purposes dead money always accelerates into the earliest possible cap year when a player is cut or traded. However the cap is made up of 2 components. NFL player salaries and roster bonuses are accounted for on a March to March rolling year but dead money is accounted for on a June 2nd to June 2nd rolling year. Since we're in October and past the 2022 June 2nd date the earliest dead money cap year is 2023. The Panthers were scheduled to account for around $5M of the dead money in 2023 before the trade. The remaining dead money and McCaffrey's 2023 earnings were similar so the trade is effectively cap neutral for the Panthers. They will feel the loss of McCaffrey in 2022 and 2023 but will see the financial benefit in 2024 and 2025.

The Panthers are effectively paying around $7.5M of McCaffrey's 2022 money as his salary was earlier converted into a bonus. Part of the trade price reflects the 49ers gaining that $7.5M in 2022 cash and cap space. It wouldn't be unreasonable to equate that figure to the 2022 4th and 2023 5th round picks. On that basis the actual trade price for McCaffrey as a player, (due the additional $7.5M on top of the $690K), would have been the 2nd and 3rd round picks in 2022.

That’s good info. Thanks for the detail.

Yeah, Cmac is a stud no doubt, but that is quite the haul for a RB. From the family that pretty much began the RBs are a dime a dozen mind set of the the present NFL.
