The pros and cons as I see them from Chip's perspective:

Pros:

The recruits come to you at USC, and Chip always did a lot of recruiting in the SoCal market, so he would be comfortable there.

Cons: USC like most big-time programs has annoying boosters whom he would have to talk to and coddle. Not as bad as, say, Texas, but still bad.

Would I be disappointed if he flew the coop? Yes. But not totally surprised. It's always been a real possibility. The real cynics say he only went to the NFL when he was faced with sanctions.

If he does stay, he will need to learn his lessons about being a GM and do a better job of rounding out the depth on the roster.

Just like us - we learn how to do things better. Hindsight being 20/20, if he had drafted Eric Flowers in the 1st, and Devin Smith in the 2nd, we might be better off. Also, signing Orlando Franklin v.s DeMarco would also be better. As said - hindsight.

unless he has an clause in his contract that says he can leave none of this shit matters.

I would be highly disappointed. I wanna see this thing through with Chip. I think Chip is a highly intelligent coach who has clearly made some HUGE mistakes as GM....these are the growing pains we need to endure to win a championship. This guy will win us a Championship if we give him some time. I think jumping off the Chip Ship would be a huge mistake. I still hold Chip accountable for his huge mistakes as GM, but make no mistake, Chip won't make the same mistakes twice.

Such a clause does mean squat in situations like these.

If a coach wants out, as a team you have to let them go, simply because keeping him in there will only make matters worse (short and possibly long term).

The best you can hope for is recouping some of the signing bonus.

Absolutely! When he got control over personnel, he brought in defensive help. including a great DB coach, and guys that can actually cover; and a real good ILB. You know that he will bring in good OL that will be either very good starters, and guys that will challenge starters as solid backups.

Lurie is not interested in recouping a signing bonus. He wants Chip to stay for a long time, as he is a forward thinking coach. Even with some mistakes, he gets them corrected. Chip is the man! There is no reason for him to go back to college. Right now, he has as good a deal as anyone.

Those college jobs for a HC are really great. They usually get total control, better job security and more money than most of the pro jobs. Then they only play 3-4 tough games a year. Really I wonder why some of these guys ever leave? Guys like Saban and Spurrier tasted the pros and headed back pretty quickly. Schiano basically ruined his career by going pro as did Butch Davis.

For the most part, what sucks about coaching in the pros is that you have to share power with the GM. Also, its a long, grinding season and even if you are doing a great job you can still end up losing alot of games. Every week is a dogfight. There are no gimmes on the schedule.

But many want the challenge of competing on the highest level, and when you find a good ownership situation like Philly, Pittsburgh or Seattle, it can be a great job. Kelly has also achieved the same sort of control he had as a college coach. This isn't Cleveland or Tampa where the management is a continuous soap opera and you can't attract the best. This Eagles job is one of the best in the business and I don't think any coach would walk away willingly.

I think Kelly will be here at least long enough to see his decisions through to a good or bad conclusion. And that is not a one year proposition. It will take an epic fail for him to leave this job.

Chip seemed to splash cold water on this today, but his "no one has contacted me" comment didn't exactly mean no way would I consider it.

Any evidence that Chip looks beyond the current year? I don't see any. He's even stated as much.

Wouldn't he be taking a pay cut to go back to college?

I want Kelly to be here, but if he leaves, that's ok. Personnel wise, I think the current roster is better suited to an offensively conservative, run-heavy philosophy. Ground and pound, play action passing, and less time on field for the defense. Basically let the D dominate and win the game. For example, if someone came in and implemented what the Falcons are trying to do under Quinn, we would be a better team *this* year.

I think Chip will remake the team again closer to fit his ideology soon enough and I am excited to see it through, but won't be inconsolable if he decides to leave.

Oh I totally feel this way. That's why so many of us laughed when he got on his high horse of morality after cutting DJax. What a fucking hypocrite he was by preaching the Do The Right Thing mantra after the trail of blood he left at Oregon.

Long before Chip left for the NFL, I remember reading that Chip was telling his players and recruits that any sanctions against the program were going to very minor. And that's exactly what ended up happening. It's funny how there's still people who believe he was running from NCAA penalties that he knew were going to be nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Chip did get nailed with an 18 month show cause by the NCAA. That fact alone makes the stuff he (or the program) did pretty damning.
