interesting idea brought up by ken holland

NHL GMs to discuss Ken Holland's idea: Carry-over penalties in playoffs | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will meet with NHL colleagues today in New York. One of the items slated to be discussed is the idea of carry-over penalties in the playoffs -- penalties assessed as time expires bridge to the next game.

It's an interesting concept. It would, for example, have meant that the Red Wings would have started Game 2 of their first-round series with Nashville with Predators captain Shea Weber serving a two-minute roughing penalty for slamming Henrik Zetterberg's head into the glass as Game 1 ended. In fact, they would have had a two-man power play, as Martin Erat was called for holding at 19:37.

"It's something I've talked about with league people and other GMs over time," Holland said Tuesday. "In the regular season, when you go from one team to another, it's a non-issue. But in a seven-game series -- we've had some history in Detroit where, when the game has been decided on the score-clock, there's been some message-sending for the next game. So maybe if there's a penalty late in a game, it would carry over.

i get the idea behind it but i don't think it would work out in game situations. i think refs would just hand out fewer penalties at the end of the game

Overall I do not like the idea, but I will say I do get annoyed when someone is an idiot at the end of the game and therefore they largely avoid being penalized.

I still think division winners invoking the automatic win clause in the playoffs has legs...

As for the topic at hand, I just don't see it being approved by the GM's, if Shanny hadn't dropped the ball, Weber wouldn't have been available to participate in game two.

Additionally, refs need to throw guys out when they commit egregious fouls instead of this 2 minute minor garbage. Just because Shanny drops the ball doesn't mean the refs should follow suit.

I think this would have a bigger effect in close games early in the series, as a guy who took a penalty with like 5 seconds left to prevent a scoring chance which could have tied the game would then have to start the next game in the box. Right now, if there are ten to fifteen seconds on the clock and you're up by a goal, and someone looks to have a chance to score, you could trip him or hold him, and by the time the whistle was blown on the call, the game would be all but over, they wouldn't have scored, and even though you broke the rules, you wouldn't be punished at all.

So I guess I could see merit, but I still don't like the idea.

its a ridiculous notion to me to carry forward penalties ... each game is its own individual event ... if something is punishable beyond 1 game > suspend

what next ... hell lets carryforward scores and make playoffs and season series aggregate score

I think they should bring back two-game total goal series and institute a Coaches' Poll to help with the standings.

Uhhh...no. I understand the thought behind it, but that's putting far too much influence into the refs hands.

It's not totally ridiculous when you consider that the NHL won't dish out the suspension hammer when it's called for.

I don't like the idea either, but I can certainly see why Holland is floating it out there. If the NHL thinks suspensions are too harsh, this would still punish the player a little for being a complete dickhead in the last minute of a game.

I can understand the rationale behind it but I can't see it happening. If anything, I would prefer to see the game continue until the penalty has expired, if the team trailing has an opportunity to tie it on that power play. I don't see either ever happening but I can see that scenario happening much easier than I can carry over penalties.

I've always thought teams should be given an anti-time out. Florida has been stuck in their zone for 2 minutes, ices the puck and calls time out and Carolina can call their anti-time out and Florida is prevented from giving their players a rest. Great idea if I do say so myself. :p

I like your scenario better. Not that I ever see it happening either.

Can I also say that this may be a bit too extreme of a change? I mean, the game isn't broken. There are certainly aspects that should be adjusted time and again (such as the trapezoid, though not necessary, and the thought of auto icing), but this would be a pretty big thing to change.
