Why do I get the feeling they're dropping Rogers so they can re-sign Whitner?

Its not a post June 1 cut. If they wait till after June 1, they will still have like 1.5 million in dead money on next year's cap. So if they cut him now, they save roughly around 5.5 million. So that puts Niners at around 15 million again in cap space.

We don't know for sure yet. You don't have to wait until June 1st to designate someone a post June 1st cut.

Niners cap hell knows for sure

Rogers would be 3 mil in dead money if pre-June 1st and 1.5 after June 1st. The thing about the the June 1st designation is that is only assigns half of the dead money to next year's cap. It doesn't save a team from dead money. It's gonna be on the cap either way and the team decides if it wants to swallow it all this year or wait til next year.

He doesn't know what the team designated the cut as. We all know what the dollar figures will be pre or post.

There is a reason Barrows reported the savings will be at least $5M....because the team hasn't announced pre or post yet.

Yeah but does it matter? Most teams would prefer to swallow the dead money if they have the space instead of putting it onto next years cap. Usually teams do the post june 1st if they have cap issues already.

It also matters for cap space next year. I guess I just don't see what the Niners would need to do with that 1.5 mil in cap space for this season.

Ask yourself why Boldin's first year cap hit is so low? They are trying to get money to sign guys. 3/4ths of our secondary is on the street and we were 7th against the pass last year. We are looking at signing bonuses for possibly a K, 2 CBs, safety and maybe QB. I don't see how $1.5M wouldn't help.

The 1.5 will help this year at the expense of next year. Similar to Boldin's 2nd year cap hit. The 1.5 could be used to pay for Dawson or Whitner but the Niners already have cap space to fill in all of those spots you mentioned. 1.5 isn't going to move the needle that much in signing guys.

In any case I see it as a pre-June 1st move and just wipe away everything on Roger's contract this year. Niners have more then enough wiggle room to sign who they need to sign and work on extensions.
