Ozzie Osbourne was the same way. I heard that Sharon saved his ass and got him sobered up or he would be pushing daisies as well.

Its pretty scarey when Sharon is the voice of reason.

Seriously this is a tragedy. As some of you may remember a year ago last week I lost a friend (named Amy) with the same addictions.

I had feelings for her as she was very intelligent, attractive and had a great personality (when sober).

I (along with others) tried to get her into rehab so bad it was very stressful. Her mom and dad live in central NY so they couldn't be here to help. Amy's mom and dad have become good friends with me and we talk often. Her mom is involved in an organization for people that have lost friends or family to cope with the loss.

Having gone through it trust me it's not a good thing. You feel so god damn helpless but as many people told me when she passed, in fact many on this site you can't help people when they are not ready to help themselves. I still have that thread bookmarked and look at it from time to time.

It's a sickening feeling and the first thing we do is blame our self for not doing more. Some things are out of our control but I will never forget the support I got here and from other's now I have bonded with her family.

Sorry for the ramble but it's just so terrible when we lose someone to this horrible disease called addiction.

Someone mentioned earlier that it is just as hard on the friends and family and that is so true.

Good post, Boss. I wasn't a fan of Amy Whinehouse and you could see this coming, but addiction is often a symptom of a much deeper sadness, abuse, depression, etc.

My only thought is it's sad that she left the world unable to overcome her problem, b/c whatever created that problem in her probably made her life pretty tough to go through while she was here. It's a shame. At least she's at peace now.

True, once they cross the line and start self medicating or looking for other outlets it's so hard to bring them back.

Like I said I have that page bookmarked from when my friend went (I would post the link but I don't think too many people understand the hurt friends and fam go thro).

It's just very said eloco and what I saw (my) Amy go through was tough to watch.

I think it's sad that someone so messed up was idolized by millions of kids.

This wasn't a question of if, but when. She simply couldn't overcome her demons.

I know what you are saying but it's like smoking, you want to quit but can't and if it's crack or what ever it's harder.

I still can't understand crack addiction because I don't know who would try it in the first place. The whole world knows it's a highly addictive drug. Alcoholism and cigarette smoking are different because they are both legal and no one wakes up thinking "I am going to be addicted to cigarettes or booze today" That happens just like gambling addiction but crack and drugs like that are different. It's a high you know you will never come down from.

I hope this made sense.

I understand what you're saying. I have relatives who've overcome alcohol & drugs (don't know what drugs they were addicted too.)

Alcohol & Drugs have different affects on different people. In my case I got really drunk one night on Tequila Shooters & Vodka. Now the only thing I can drink & not feel sick afterwards is Beer.

People use alcohol & drugs to dull pain & get a high. Atheletes get addicted to pain killers because they have to play their sport. With all the ads about this drug & that drug causing all kinds of problems for people that drug makers are being sued constantly it really makes a person think. Are the drugs the FDA approves as dangerous to people as the illegal ones? To be honest I think it depends on the person & how much they use.

This clip is not about Amy, but it struck a chord with me and this thread reminded me of it. It gets better and more relevant near the end.

Serious question, and I apologize if any of this comes off as me being a dick. Why is there such sympathy for drug addicts but such a disgust for very fat people? Clearly both groups have an inability to control themselves, we can assume depression or some other lingering issue causes them to over indulge. Yet if this story was about Amy Winehouse eating herself to death or being really fat and having a heartattack the general reaction would be disgust.

Because some people are just ignorant and make assumptions about others without knowing all the facts. It's no different than a racist making assumptions about a person purely based on the color of their skin.
