it use to be the stadium were named after the owner, the city, or the team. now it is the business of the week.:L:lame:

Indeed.

No word on how much they got for this. The king of name selling are the Mets, as they are getting $ 20 mil per year from Citi Bank, with the average amt being in the $ 1.5 - $ 3 mil per year range.

I can't wait to go see a game in either The Howard Johnson
Parking Lot, Harry Carey Field at Budweiser Stadium, or The Stop and Frisk Stadium.

Which makes me think of this. They are still building the new Levi's stadium here near me for the 49ers to play in next year.

To that end, I wonder if they will try to make the playing surface out of denim, and, if they did, would it work?

Boise State already does the blue field, so it would only be one step further........

Pick one, or pick all.

That said, I am hearing that the Rams are maybe thinking about moving back. The NFL wants a team there BAD.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports ([ame=""]via Twitter[/ame]) that trade talks for Rays catcher Jose Lobaton have begun to heat up. Topkin notes that teams with interest or need at the position include the Diamondbacks, Indians, Rockies, White Sox, Mets and Nationals.
The 29-year-old Lobaton slashed a solid .249/.320/.394 with seven homers for the Rays in 2013 and also belted one of the most dramatic and improbable home runs of the postseason. A switch-hitter, Lobaton has historically been better from the right side of the dish than the left, but he bucked that trend and swung the bat better as a lefty (.736 OPS) than as a righty (.653) in 2013.
While Lobaton is a solid, controllable bat -- he is a Super Two player that is not eligible for free agency until the 2017-18 offseason -- at a thin position, he also comes with some defensive question marks. Lobaton has caught just 16 percent of attempted base stealers in his career and was below average at blocking pitches in the dirt in 2013 (per Fangraphs). While he's not a poor pitch-framer, he also doesn't add significant value in that department, either (per Matthew Carruth's work at StatCorner).
Lobaton has been connected to the White Sox and Nationals in trade talks so far this offseason, with the Nats being the most recently linked club. A trade would seem to be beneficial for both Lobaton and the Rays; the Rays acquired and extended Ryan Hanigan this offseason in addition to re-signing Jose Molina, leaving Lobaton without a clear path to playing time. Additionally, a trade would save the Rays a bit of cash, as Lobaton avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $900K salary for 2014.

Where do you guys think he ends up?

As far as immediate need, I would say Seattle. They have a young kid Zunino they want to be the # 1 this year, but they could bring in Lobaton to caddy for him until he is really ready. Other than that, maybe the A's, but they would have to move one of the 3 catchers they already have to make this make sense.

And past history would say, if they moved to L.A before (from Cleveland), they can do it again.

Wishing a very happy 80th birthday to one of my favorite players ever, Hank Aaron.

hammerinhank.jpg

The image above shows longtime Major League slugger Hank Aaron, who broke Babe Ruth’s all-time home-run record 40 years ago this season. In honor of Aaron’s 80th birthday celebration in Washington, DC, it will be dedicated at the Smithsonian this weekend.
Here’s the shocking part: It’s a painting.
Portrait artist Ross Rossin specializes in realistic portraits of world leaders, celebrities and historical figures, but painted “Hank,” the portrait above, before he fully understood Aaron’s stature in baseball.
“Blame it on my European roots but I wasn’t wholly aware of the magnitude of Hank Aaron’s legacy and importance to America,” the Bulgarian-American artist said. “When he came to my studio four years ago, on Feb. 5th 2010, which happened to be his 76st birthday, I was most impressed by his engaging charm and magnetism.
“We talked, I took photos of him and then we talked some more. It was only afterward that I learned that he is the king, he is the best in the world.”
Before its turn at the Smithsonian, “Hank” was on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

I stopped buying cards back in the 1980's. Since then, I just come across them, or are given them from folks who have them and no longer wanted them.

I sold my original collection back in 1985. Got a car for them.

Had I waited a year, I probably could have bought a house.

Timing is everything.....

Back to baseball cards. Here is a piece on how Ken Griffey Jr. still has a ton of his own rookie cards.

And, no baseball card discussion should be without this most famous "oops" card.
