Morning sirs!!! I feel like 47 at times in which I can't make up my friggin mind on who we should draft, who our next goaltender should be, and who we should pursue via FA? My head is spinning in circles. I kind of go off of for example, Meltzer's opinion and some of your guy's perception on a player. As of this very second, I don't want to trade Read for Bernier because if I was reading some posts here, Smith is a UFA? Doesn't make sense to trade? As for the draft, I really don't care because in recent years, the Flyers have drafted well with their 1st round pick. Any of these guys mentioned should be a safe pick IMO.
I really don't want to trade Read. He's near the top bang-for-your-buck list on the team. I get that you have to give up value to add value, but the reason the flyers are in cap hell all the time is because they dont have any top 6 guys making 900k against the cap. Dealing the only one you have just isn't smart IMO.
Goalie-wise, I want Bryz to be bought out. However, if they don't plan on signing someone in his place, I'd rather than keep him then roll in to the season with everything riding on Mason. I want a goaltender battle with Mason next year. It doesn't make a ton of sense to me to add a 'young up and comer' because you already have that in Mason, plus your 'prospect of the future' is Stolarz. It's possible that neither guy pans out, but it seems silly to make trades/FA signings based on the assumption that neither will. Goaltending is really overblown these days. Yes it's important to have a good goalie, but finding that goalie is hard, and it likely won't last. Outside of Lundqvist and Brodeur, no other goalies have had longer than 2-3 years at elite status in the last 5-10 years. Emery and Smith are probably my top two UFA goalies for the Flyers to go after, but as long as it's a guy that can at least compete for the starting job, I'm ok with whoever.
On the draft, I'm pretty confident the Flyers will end up with a good player. They do a great job in round 1. I would like to see them depart from the best player available strategy a little and take a defensemen. I don't want them to take a defensemen at all costs, but if you have a dman and a forward ranked within 3-5 spots of each other, I would like to see them reach a bit for the dman. The theory of drafting quality and then trading it for the position of need only works if you're drafting equal value. Right now, you could draft a 30 goal, 75 point player and be pleased with how your pick turned out, but it won't net you a top 2 dman in a straight up trade. Dmen are just far more valuable these days.
