I mean, maybe they plan on trading Duchene for help on D? Maybe Seth Jones is overvalued? I just can't figure out how they can pass him up.

That's more my point. I know you can't risk a bust when you have a #1 overall pick on your hands...but on offense, they have some great talent. Heck, a lot of the talent had down years last year.

mirtle had a stats heavy piece last week i think reviewing the past 20 drafts and surmising ... no matter what the level of hype ... highly touted dmen never seem to end up being the superstars that the experts originally think they will be

there are too many dimensions to the position of defenseman to properly evaluate how a junior players career will extrapolate to the nhl ... meanwhile more times than not a generational super skilled forward takes that game to the next level

To paraphrase it's basically Sakic saying "We're taking MacKinnon if we pick #1. And yes we really REALLY mean it......oh but I suppose we'd entertain trade offers if anyone is interested."

They are in a pretty awkward situation. They likely want Jones because of positional needs and his ties to the team, but they don't want to use the # pick on him since they know he's not the BPA. Florida on the other hand would probably prefer MacKinnon, but really they need pretty much everything. So they really isn't a ton of value in it for them to trade up to get the guy they might be able to get anyway. If MacKinnon goes #1 to the Avs I'm sure they'd be fine with Jones or Drouin going to Florida to help fill 1 of their many other organizational needs.

Maybe Seth Jones is overvalued?

watched the kid play out here in Portland...He aint overvalued, but sounds like he's UNDERRATED to me. Great talent, size, speed and a wicked slapper. Avs need D with Speed. It's all and well fine to fly but someones got to clean up the mess on the backside.

Mr. Roy...defense wins in the playoffs...it aint rocket science.
