If the Avalanche keeps the top pick in the June 30 NHL draft, it won't take the formerly presumptive candidate, defenseman Seth Jones.

After a week of internal meetings, Avalanche brass came to a conclusion: Jones won't be their pick. Instead, it could be any one of three forwards: Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin or Alexander Barkov.

"If we do pick first, we're leaning more toward one of those three forwards," Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic told The Denver Post.

Because the owners of the number one pick have every reason to be honest about who they are taking. No way they would mislead people in order to:

1) Screw up the folks below them if they are lying and DO pick Jones
2) Get better trade offers from folks who are worried they might miss out on a good forward

Basically I assume that any news that comes from teams drafting is white noise until the draft has actually started.

Absolutely. Even if true (which it may very well be), the only reason to make this public knowledge would be to try to gain more leverage if they are to trade down.

If the Avs were to keep the pick and take MacKinnon, they would be loaded down the middle of the ice.

I still think its he wrong decision to pass on Jones, but I believe that EJ is very underrated and could make Jones "expendable" in favor of MacKinnon.

If Colorado could pull Drew Shore or something similar from Florida as compensation for trading down to #2 then they should take that and run. But honestly I think they'd be lucky if Florida even offered that. They are probably hoping for someone like Kulikov or someone/picks of similar value but I can't see it happening. It's funny because the team with the #1 pick is suppose to be the one in the driver's seat but circumstances almost make it seem like they aren't this year. Sure they get to pick whoever they want with the #1 pick but it seems like the guy they want can be taken a spot or 2 later and everyone knows it, so now they are publicly stating he's not the guy they want.

If true & they do take MacKinnon it's the right move. #1 Centers are incredibly difficult to find. Sorry dash I have to do it.:D: Just ask Jay Feaster, he was willing to give up this years 1st & 3rd round pick for the chance to give the Blue Jackets Ryan O'Reilly. He offered all 3 of his teams 1st round picks for the 1st pick overall & was turned down. It's been a rough season for Feaster & the offseason hasn't been kind to him so far either.

A kid who plays hockey BECAUSE the Avalanche exist, a homegrown kid and someone that Sakic Personally had a hand in helping along and they DON'T take him? Joe must be on crack.

I get the #1 center thing, but a stud defenseman goes much farther. Never mind the fact that the kid is a product of the Avalanche youth hockey program. How do you pass on that? Just the marketing and community good will is enough to boost ticket sales for the whole season.

Here in Columbus they promote the hell out of Kiraly and Murphy and neither one of them were drafted by the Jackets.

I hope he's bluffing.

thought from the getgo that the Avs should keep the 1st and try and deal for the second from the PANS (or 3rd or 4th if Jones falls)

what would it take for the PANS ... the 32nd overall pick plus Duchene? more?

this way the Avs can possibly shit the bed again next season with youngsters and probably get a top 3 pick in the 2014 draft

Am I the only one that really likes Matt Duchene? They have their number 1 center as well as a top line winger. Solidify the D and take the guy that will play 30 minutes a night.

over the past couple of years, the way the Avs and the coaching staff has dealt with him, it makes you wonder how much they like him

I would take Duchene in a second. And I am comfortable with the centers in my organization.

dont get me wrong ... I personally like Duchene ... but when i look at the Avs situation next year and beyond, theyll have Landeskog, Duchene and O Reilly all being RFA's after this coming season ... for a team that is shitting the bed at the box office and has a self imposed cap ceiling that puts them in the bottom 10 in spending, it should be a consideration

imo ... if you can get Jones and MacKinnon at the expense of losing Duchene and NOT next years first rounder, you do it

I agree. I'm just pissed the Jackets picks aren't high enough to get there.

I still think the Jackets move at least one and Cody Golubef (odd D out in the system) to try and get close enough for Lindholm.

And the Avs box office woes is exactly why they need to pick Jones.
